Business page –

Tax collections increase in south – Zone 6 of the SRI collected $729,969,000 in 2017 vs $692,491,000 in 2016. Year to year change from 2013-14 was 8.4% increase, 2014-15 increased 3.4%, 2015-16 decreased 4.0%, and 2016-2017 increased 12.6% which would have been 5.4% without the tax rate increase due to the 2016 earthquake. Sectors that grew most in Azuay were public administration, mining, and construction which grew 110.15%. Much of the construction growth was due to China Gezhouba Group Company Limited which builds large projects such as hydroelectric projects. By itself, that business paid $7.196 million in taxes in 2017.

The automotive sector also rebounded strongly. The main decrease was in the real estate sector with 42%, but much of that was due to a recent tax on real estate sales which might be overturned by the referendum. Sellers are waiting to see if that happens. The most important economic group in Zone 6 for the high level of taxes paid is the Grupo Eljuri. The businesses that contribute the most to SRI are the Banco del Austro, CELEC, and Induglob. <So – all of you gringos contributing mightily to the Cuencano economy – how much did you pay in taxes last year?>
