El Mercurio Anniversary show – The newspaper will be 95 on 22/10 and there will be a celebratory show el viernes, 18/10 a las 20:00 in the teatro Pumapungo. The invitation will serve as your ticket. <I don’t know how you rate an invitation.>
Opening – The “Arrebol” Gallery (Mariscal Lamar 17-49 y Miguel Heredia) opened today. Artists Eduardo Cerviño, Carlos Vásconez, Rodrigo Aguilar, Eduardo Segovia and others were involved in the project. The opening exhibit has paintings and sculptures by artists from different countries.

Festival Agenda – The city presented the agenda of activities for the Independence of Cuenca at a press conference this morning.
Fashionart – The 6th Edition FASHIONART 2019 will be on 2, 3,& 4/11 in the Mansión Vizcaya (autopista next to Colineal), There will be 120 exhibitors in fashion, deisgn, home, decoration, as well as a Festival Gastronómico. It will open with a runway fashion show featuring las Reinas y Misses de Cuenca.
Festival de danzas – There will be a dance festival in San Gerardo el 19/10 a las 15:00.
Chola Cuencana – 16 of the 21 rural parishes have fielded candidates for the Chola Cuencana who will be elected el próximo 3/11 a las 14:00. The Consorcio sponsoring the contest will also open a gastronomic and cultural festival at the Corporación Austral de Exhibiciones Compañia de Economía Mixta (CADEDEM – av. México y de las Américas). There will be 120 exhibitors and music.
Festividades en Chordeleg – The United Nations “Creative City” will offer concerts from 31/10-2/11, mostly in the plaza Fray José María Vargas. There will be concerts el 31/20 a las 20:00, el 1/11 a las 20:00, and el 2/11 a las 18:00 in the plaza Central. Craftsmen will also be exhibiting their work.

Titular – Ratifican condena a Glas (Glas’ sentence ratified) – A Tribunal of the Corte Nacional de Justicia rejected the appeal of Jorge Glas, his uncle and 5 others, who were convicted of illicit association in connection with the Odebrecht case. The Tribunal ratified the sentence of 6 years in prison and payment of $33.4 million collectively.
Urban plans – Teams of technicians from the city are preparing 4 plans which should be ready in el próximo enero for approval by mayo. The plans are: el Plan de Ordenamiento Territorial, el Plan de uso y Ocupación del Suelo, el Plan de Manejo del Centro Histórico y el Plan de Movilidad. (the Land Management Plan, the Land Use and Occupation Plan, the Historic Center Management Plan and the Mobility Plan).
City Budget – The City of Cuenca’s budget for 2020 is estimated at $215,141,453. Income will come from the payment of taxes and contributions ($87,197,567); the Government ($58,295,247); and credit lines ($68,648,638). Expenses include current obligations such as payroll ($26,824,594); investments in works, projects, and programs ($158,276,859); and debt payment ($23,000,000).
Substation work – The electric company will be doing scheduled maintenance on the 03 Monay substation on Max Uhle y Pumapungo between hoy y el próximo martes. Prices – Prices of products in the “canasta básica” (basic basket) are back to normal. Potatoes, tomatoes, oranges, tangerines, yuca, and banana all went up in price during the strike, but are coming back down to normal. Potatoes are still higher than before the strike.
Employment declines – A poll conducted by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC) showed unemployment increased from 4% in septiembre, 2018 to 4.9% in Sept. of this year. Full time employment worsened with the equivalent of 46,431 people falling into unemployment or underemployment.
