Otras cosas –

Obesity and diabetes – At the Tercer Curso Internacional de Diabetes, a participant said that diabetes along with hypertension, are the primary causes of death for both men and women in the country, with diabetes being the primary cause for women since 2010. In 1980, the death rate from those 2 causes was 5.2 per 10,000. Now the rate is over 20 per 10,000. In rich countries, it is the poor who have diabetes and chronic diseases, and that is happening in Ecuador. Almost 70% (?) of the population is overweight or obese as a previously organic and natural diet changed to one of “chatarra” (junk) products. At the same time, malnutrition is still a problem.

IESS – The hospital can now perform flexible ureteroscopic surgery on body parts you usually sit on. The gizmo can be snaked as far as the inside of your kidney to remove kidney stones <Biological roto-rooter>. They have been doing these procedures since this past enero. The hospital says it is also adding long-range colonoscopy equipment capable of performing tonsillectomies.

Flights – Both TAME and LATAM had flight delays and cancellations from the beginning of June to date between Cuenca and Quito. The delays were due to non-scheduled maintenance on the plane. Other cancellations were due to the climate, with visibility less than 4km. Although LATAM can land with visibility of 2 km. since it uses a satellite system. <Seems like LATAM wants people to know that those cloudy day delays weren’t theirs.>

La Asociación de Corredores de Bienes Raíces (ACBIR – Real Estate Brokers Association) del Azuay – ACBIR has a new web site which is affiliated with the Spanish site Mitula which is in 44 countries speaking 15 languages. The 70 members can show their listings. <I guess you’ll have to Google ACBIR del Azuay yourself since there’s not one in the article.>

And that´s all for today so Hasta Mañana –
