Call for artists – The City of Cuenca and the Museo de la Ciudad are inviting plastic artists who want to show their work in the “Cuenca, Ciudad Artistica” (Cuenca, Artistic City) exhibit on 9/11.  Call 099 822 0016 for more info.

Cine – The film distribution program for high school students continues Wed. at 10:00 in the CCE.

Filmes – The Alianza’s Tuesday movie will be “A Peine J’ouvre les yeux” (Apenas abro los ojos – I barely open the eyes) at 19:00 in the Alianza Francesa.

Ravel’s Bolero –  The Compañía de Danza Contemporánea of the U. of Cuenca has choreographed Bolero and will perform with the University Symphony Tues. (Martes) at 20:00 in the Teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz.  Free.

Book launch – “Espiritualmente lleno, mentalmente listo” (Spiritually full, mentally ready) by Geovany Jiménez will be presented on Miércoles at 19:00 in the Iglesia Verbo (av. Diez de Agosto y Loja).  It’s a self help book about having purpose in your life. (Hey – you’re born, you die, and hopefully you did some good in the interim.)

Teatro – Companies from México y Brasil perform in the “Escenarios del Mundo” Festival today with “Amarillo” and “Línea de sombra” for students and “Fruto del amor” for the general public.

Review – José Enrique Pacheco’s comedy show, “El monólogo del pipi” was reviewed.

Oil production – The state oil company Petroamazonas is breaking production records with 450,105 barrels per day.

Volcán Tungurahua – The alert level has been changed from naranja (orange) to amarilla (yellow – your words for the day).

Tourism – The “Tsuer Entsa” complex, run by a shuar community in Naranjal, Guayas brings herbal based natural medicines to serve its clients.  It also uses baños termales (thermal baths) with natural hot and cold pools to treat muscle pain, bones, and rheumatism.

Portal Artesanal Cuenca (200 artesans have completed the requirements for exhibiting in one of the 185 available spaces in the PAC (Bolívar y Huayna Cápac). The cost to rent a 1.5 sq. meter space is $50/mo. with a renewable 6 month least. Hours for the facility are 10-20:00, M-F and 10-18:00, Sat & Sun. The deadline for proposals has been extended a week to this Viernes.

Road work – 24 de Mayo will get new paving from Tres Puentes to the IESS hospital. The machinery is currently placing asphalt between 3 Puentes and the colegio (high school – not college) Manuela Garaicoa.  The next phase is to grind down the asphalt for a new layer between the high school and hospital.  Aside from weather delays, the work should take 2 months after which the machinery will be taken to av. Antonio Ricuarte and then 12 de Abril for the stretch between Loja and Unidad Nacional.

Bomberos – The Cantonal Council appointed the last 3 members of an 8 member Administrative and Disciplinary Council for the Fire Department.  This council will now make a short list of candidates to head the department when the current chief’s term is over.

Police controls – 35 people were detained at various checkpoints in the city over the weekend for DUI.  Police were also checking for LED headlights which can dazzle other drivers and affect their vision and safety.  If your car has LED lights, the police can fine you and remove the lights.

Deportes –

Ruta 10K Nocturna, camina, trota o corre (10K Night Route – walk, jog or run) (only way I can go 10K is by motorized transport) – This is the last week to register.  There are a few spaces left for the walk/jog/run which is on Sábado, 29/10 at 19:00. Register at Mi Boletería in the Mall del Río or at Fybeca on Bolívar.
