Hola, Todos –

I went into El Centro today to get an agenda for for the fiestas, tried 3 places and at all of them “se acabó.” (All gone, ran out, all over – your word for the day and you’ll hear it a lot.)  So if any of you has an extra to give away, chl jeanne logo could you leave it at Carolina Bookstore?  If I have a paper copy I’ll translate the events.

Pagina cultural –

Upcoming agenda event –

Festival del Bolero – the Casa “Avispero” (calles Rigoberto Veintimilla 1-48 y Paucarbamba – 30 meters from the Fiscalía) is holding a Bolero Festival on 29/10 at 20:00.  Tickets available at “Avispero.”  Cost: $10.00.

Articles about –

The Symphony – There will be two large concerts on jueves, 27/10 and viernes, 28/10 with the OSC, the U. of Cuenca Symphony, the conservatory chorus, and Quimera and Voices.  There is a system of reserved seating with tickets available from the 4 co-producers – OSC, Cuenca Symphony, the City and the Conservatorio.  If a ticket holder is not there 15 minutes before 20:00, that seat will be given to someone in line.  (I hope that those of you interested know someone in those 4 organizations – now´s the time to use the “palanca.”)

Theater and dance workshops – A month long workshop in Danza árabe started today and will end on 25/11.  Hours are M-F from 9-11:00.  Classes are directed at women and are free.  There are currently 8 students with a capacity for 20. Registration (bring a copy of your cedula – this is not a side comment – you do need a copy of your cedula to register) and classes are at the centro cultural Angel en la Casa de Chaguarchimbana.

“Mi Cuenca Canta” (My Cuenca Sings) – The 21st Popular Latin American Music Concert will be on sábado, 29/10 at 14:00 in the Parque de la Madre.  The groups will play Andean music.

Art classes – The Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno (MMAM) will start the after school art workshops for this academic year on 7/11.  If you have a child you want to enroll, go to MMAM (Sucre 15-27 – facing San Sebastián Park) or call 413 4900 ext. 1960.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Estancada obra en redondel a El Valle (Work on redondel to El Valle stagnant) – It might restart in 2 weeks.

Thrill seekers – Parque Aventuri is at the Mirador de Turi and has slides, canopy (some kind of adventure sport) and the columpio (The Swing) which swings you out into the air 400 meters above Cuenca.  The swing cables can hold from 800-1000 pounds.(So you can enjoy the bird’s eye view even if you’re on the chunky side. Great view if your heart can take it.)

Fair – Afro-Ecuadorians celebrated Afro-Ecuatoriano month and the International Decade for Afro-descendants in San Blas yesterday with a show of gastronomy and crafts.  Mama Llama, director of the Movimiento Afro del Azuay, said there are about 17,000 afro-descendants in Azuay based on the 2010 census.

Traffic in human heads – Two people from Morona Santiago were arrested inside the Terminal Terrestre in Puyo, Pastaza after being reported by other citizens.  (They must have been acting really, really weird to get reported for suspicious behavior in a bus station.)  Evidently they wanted to sell this head (shrunken – not full sized).  Police in Puyo opened the box they were carrying.  There is a collectors market for shrunken heads.

Internacional –

Venezuela –  The National Assembly is meeting on martes with one item on the agenda.  The opposition majority feels the president has broken the constitutional thread and his situation as head of state needs to be evaluated.  The item is “Debate sobre la Constitución, el orden constitucional y la democracia” (Debate on the Constitution, constitutional order and democracy)

Discuentos y compras –

Gran Circo de Rusia (The Grand Russian Circus) – 28/10 to 6/11 with shows at: vie 28, 8:00pm / sáb 29, 5:00 & 8:00 / dom 30, 4:00 and 7:00.  Shows at the Zona del Narancay, across the street from the platform.  (That location is a mystery to me.) Tickets available at Millenium Plaza and Boletería del Circo (Circus box office).

And that´s all for today so Hasta Mañana –
