Cuenca will start with a parade on Sat., 14/5 starting at San Blas and ending at Parque Calderón. 3,000 agendas have been printed for activities organized by the museum and cultural spaces network. Activities are scheduled from Wed, 18/5 to Sat, 21/5. There will be extended hours to 20:00 on Wed. & Sat.

Poetry contest – the XXIX Premio Internacional de Peosía LOEWE is calling for entries. The prize is 25,000 Euros. The catch is the poem has to be in Spanish. The closing date for entries is 24/6 – go to www.loewe.com/eu_es&fundacion-loewe-poesia for more info.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Emelec puntero gracias a derrota del Barcelona (I have no idea how to translate this. It`s soccer. How would you translate “Young’s Hail Mary” connects with Rice in end zone” to Spanish?)

Miners killed – Two miners were killed in a landslide at the mining concession Los Ríos. The mine where they were working did not have permits. People living in the area indicated there were at least 20 more illegal mines in the area.

El Gremio de Maestras de Corte, Confección y Afines del Azuay (The Guild of Masters and Associates of Cutting and Dressmaking of Azuay) celebrated its 38th year.

There will be a Feria de los Artesanos (Crafts Fair) from Thu., 12/5 to Sun., 15/5 in parque San Blas with 50 exhibitors. The Mother’s Day Fair over the weekend was rained out.

Reconstruction – Two Colombian professors were interviewed about reconstruction after the quake. They said construction systems need to change. One introduced the concept of the “resilient city.” There are 12 universities working on the reconstruction process.

Amenidades –

Pink Floyd – The complete collection of Pink Floyd will be available on vinyl. The first 4 albums will be out on 3/6. (And most likely available on a CD at your local tienda at about the same time.)

“WL Bodas y Eventos” – A groups of two textile designers, a photographer and a representative of the “Retrochic” furniture brand have formed a group for social and wedding events. They will hold a fashion show on Thu., 19/5 in the Centro de Evento “Kalikanto” which is in a patrimonial house restored in the “Vintage-Industrial” style. (Wonder what that looks like – no address given.)

Internacional –

Brazil – The second largest contractor in Brazil, Andrade Gutiérrez, will return 1 billion reales ($285 million) to “las arcas públicas” (the public coffers – your words for the day. When was the last time (if ever) you used “coffers” in English?) according to an agreement with the Justice. The company admitted to bribing public officials to get Petrobras projects, a World Cup soccer stadium, and a nuclear and a hydroelectric plant. They also admitted to price fixing among the largest contractors in Brazil. (I wonder how many members of the opposition received those bribes?)

And that´s all for today so Hasta Mañana –

Jeanne
