Fiesta de la Música – The Alianza Francesa started calling for participation in their Fiesta de Música which will be on 16-17/7.  It is looking for musicians, helpers, private spaces, photographers, audiovisual producers, and designers.

“Show del chuza” (untranslatable – I think I need the Morlaca dictionary.) – This dialogue without taboos was at Becken House (Calle Larga y Benigno Malo) Tues.  The show talked about things you wouldn’t discuss at the family dinner table, but you would discuss with friends over a beer.

Upcoming and ongoing agenda events –

CCE – The CCE is preparing a proposal to get more participation by the public.  It is getting ready to call for and publicize permanent art projects and workshops for teaching and forming youth.

Research project on the indigenous – A project in the Research Department at the U. of Cuenca in the School of Philosophy and the Human Rights Classroom, studied how the indigenous in Cuenca are viewed, how they have entered life in Cuenca, and how they arrange their lives.  (If you’re interested in sociology, this is worth a read.)

Book launch – “Geografía Sagrada – Arqueoastronomía de Pumapungo – Guapondelig” (Sacred Geography – Archaeoastronomy of Pumapungo – Guapondelig) by Hernán Loyola will be presented Wed. at 18:00 in the Sala de la Unidad de Cultura (Hall of the Culture Unit) at the U. of Cuenca. His conclusion is that Pumapungo is an agro-solar calendar representing the stages of growing corn – sowing, growing, harvesting, and a fallow period.

Bienal – La Casa de los Arcos (Calle Larga y Tarqui) is a venue for the drawings of Guayaquilenean Luis Chenche.

CCE-Guayas – The CCE is Guayas is looking for women artists to show in the Salón de la Mujer.  The exhibit has the concepts of recycling and memory.  Artists should use something recycled that is related to a personal memory.  (Then go ahead and work your artistic magic on the gizmo or whatchamacallits.)  There is a prize of $1000.  Works submitted have to be original and never in another show or competition.  Entries should be submitted by jueves, 2/3 until 17:00.  For more info, call (04) 2300 500.

Music classes – The Centro Musical Santa Cecilia is registering students for classes in keyboards, accordion, guitar and requinto.  Classes run from domingo a domingo and are for regular students as well as the blind.  The center is in the building of the “Sociedad de No Videntes” (Society of the Sightless) on Las Herrerías y del Arupo in the Casa de Chaguarchimbana sector.

Otras cosas – 

Titular – Buscar otra empresa será tarea inmediata (Finding another company will be the immediate task) – The City Attorney said that if the contract with CCRC (Consorcio Cuatro Ríos de Cuenca) is terminated, a contract with a replacement contractor should be signed immediately.  The contract with CCRC started in 2013 for $72 million and to date, CCRC has invoiced $42 million or 58% completion.  If the contract goes into mediation, the contract calls for that to happen in Chile.

Election observers – The CNE signed an agreement with the Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) to observe the elections del próximo 19 de febrero.  (Is it getting easier – you’ve seen these words often enough.)

Transition committee – The Government has formed a transition committee to give the incoming president the information he/she will need to govern.  (The list of things covered makes this sound like the Handbook for Presidents in 3 volumes.  I had a set of those in another life – a 3 volume handbook of professional practice.)

Protests – “Galleros” (Cock fighting promoters, breeders) want Pres. Correa to veto the article of a new “Codigo Orgánico del Ambiente” (Organic Code of the Environment) that bans animal fighting.  The Code was passed el pasado 20 de deciembre with 75 for, 33 abstentions (fence sitting chickens), and 8 against. the Code deals with responsible management of urban animals (And yes, that includes your Fifi and probably Elsie who grazes in the empty lot behind your house as well.), hunting, and public shows with animals.

San Francisco Plaza – The “Dirección Municipal de Áreas Históricas y Patrimoniales” (Municipal Department of Historical and Patrimonial Areas) received 11 bids for the remodeling of SF Plaza.  The bidding closed yesterday and a 15 day period to evaluate the bids and qualify the bidders will follow.  At the same time, there will be a publicity campaign for vendors and neighbors including workshops, assemblies and meetings.  (Are you happy yet?)

Ecological buses – Two of the buses acquired by the Cámara de Transporte de Cuenca (Cuenca Chamber of Transportation) are already in circulation with the other five starting service in the “próximo meses.”  (New word – meses – months)

Internacional –

Venezuela – Three of the 6 new bills for Venezuela started circulating yesterday – the 500, 5,000 and 20,000 bolívares.

“Don Bosco 8K” race – There will be an 8K run on el próximo 29 de enero followed by an art and food festival at the Unidad Educativa Técnico Salesiano.  Cost: $5.00.  (The article is geared towards the students, families and friends who all know where to go to sign up.  You are on your own with Google.)

“La Ruta de los Paisajes” (The Scenic Route) – This cycling event, organized by the Bici Andes group, will be el próximo 12 de febrero.  The ride starts at 8:00 from the “El Molle” sector in Challuabamba and ends at the bandshell in Gualaceo.  There are 2 circuits – one of 50 km and 100% mountains, the other of 30 km and 70% mountains.  Register at Monster Bike, Freestyle, Base Xtreme y Cube and Freestyle de Gualaceo.  For more info, call 098 469 9297 and 099 510 1034.

Ad for Deportiva Cuenca – Noche Colorada 2017 (Red Night – like a fans’ night, I think) – 19:10 Dance group and End; 19:20 Show with Au-D; 20:00 Presentation of the team (Always liked that part of a game – you could always tell who was doing especially well.); 20:30 Fireworks show; 21:00 Game time – Deportivo Cuenca vs Caracas F.C.  (So those of you with a view of el estadio will get a fireworks show.)
