Hola, Todos –

Pagina cultural –

Upcoming and ongoing agenda events –

Drag – Teatro Drag Dionisios will present “La rosca de reyes” (The thread of kings) from tWed. to sábado at 20:00 in el Sono (Borrero 6-83).  The theater seats 50.  Cost: $7.00.  Call 2850-859 for reservations.  (Or have your facilitator do it.)

Cursillo de Diseño – Estudio 14 has organized a mini-course to learn graphic design for publicity pieces.  Hours will be 10:00, 12:00, 17:00 and 19:00 from 4-18/1.  Cost: $85.00 plus $15.00 registration fee.  Get more info at 096 7506499 or estudio14@hotmail.com.  You will receive a certificate from SETEC  (Save it for your resume.  You never know when you might need it.)

Cantante colombiana – Columbian singer Urpi Barco, who has performed in jazz festivals in Colombia and other countries, will perform el jueves at 20:00 in the sala “Alfonso Carrasco” (Luis Cordero y Pres. Córdova).  Get tickets at La Cigale (Honorato Vasquez y Luis Cordero).  Cost:  $6.00 until tomorrow, and presold, $4.00. (Either I’m not picking up something or it truly is confusing.  I think a previous article had the lower price through Wed., and the higher price on the day of the event.)

Articles about –

Marco Robles – He was recently named a member of the Academia Nacional de Historia (all cognates, all yours).

Mujeres caciques hubo antes de independencia – Research published by the U. Andina Simón Bolívar, in the magazine “Procesos” (No. 42) showed there was an exception to the exclusion and mistreatment of the Indigenous and especially women during Spanish colonialism.  In the north Andes there were women who led their communities and this female leadership predated the conquest.  In the Colonial era, these women represented their communities and negotiated with the Spanish.

Mascaradas – Registrations opened yesterday for the comparsas which celebrates la Fiesta de los Inocentes.  The first entry was from the U. of Cuenca.  Enter at the Amistad Club, (Pres. Córdova y Padre Aguirre, lower level of the Alli Tiana hotel) after 18:00.  There are 4 categories of entries (I think based on how many people in your group.).  Cost: $20.00.

Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca – The orchestra will take an international symphonic approach this year.  Conductor Michael Meissner will highlight Ecuadorian composers.  (There was more detail in the article than that apparent contradiction.)

The symphony’s first concert will be el viernes a las 20:00 (the Friday at 20:00) in the teatro Pumapungo with orchestral and operatic pieces.

Otras cosas –

Titular – 57 lugares para pagar prediales (57 locations to pay property taxes) – If you pay in the first 15 days of this month, you get a 10% discount.  (Nice to see an incentive to pay early instead of just fines for paying late.)  Several property owners noted that their taxes had gone down.

Hundimiento – 4 classrooms at “La Inmaculada Fe y Alegría” School in Zaruma fell into an “hundimiento” (subsidence – it looks like a sinkhole in the photo).  There was an emergency called two weeks ago due to the sinking and mining activity.  Rains on 14/12 filtered into the area of the subsidence and collapsed a retaining wall at the school.  (I bet that wall was already creeping so they called the emergency.  My guess the bottom was sliding out – why would anyone think retaining wall footings are any beefier than column to floor connections?)

Elections – The campaign season has officially started.  See the article in Tuesday’s CHL for more info.

SBU (Salario Básico Unificado) – The Unified Basic Salary rose to $375/mo. on 1/1. Also raised were alimony, traffic fines and electoral or judicial paperwork which are based on the SBU.  (So your cleaning lady should get a raise.)

Real Estate 4 municipal properties are being restored.  The Centro Múltiple El Cenáculo and the Casa Jesús Arriaga or Casa del Arco will be delivered in the first trimester of this year.   The other 2 projects are the Casa de la Lira in El Vado which should be complete in julio próximo.  The Casa Palacios Abad is about 20% complete and expected to be finished in octubre próximo.

Intercultural – The article today is about how to make a Saraguran hat.  First raise your lamb.  (Call me back for the next step in a few months once you’ve got your lamb.  There seem to be 4 more steps about which I am insufficiently interested to read.)

Internacional –

Prison brawl – “Una reyerta” at a Brazilian prison in Manaus yesterday left 60 dead. The fight between two gangs put a spotlight on the war over control of prisons in Brazil.

Puerto Rico – The new governor, Ricardo Rosselló, said there isn’t money for public employee payroll in febrero.  He inherited a $6,000 million debt.

And that´s all for today so Hasta Mañana –
