Articles about –

Traditional musical instruments – A workshop on how to make instruments will be given by by Adolfo Idrovo under the auspices of CIDAP.  The course will be from 19/9 to 19/10 from 16:30-19:30.  The cost of $30 will cover tools and materials and you will learn to make as many instruments as the time allows.  In Idrovo’s workshop in the Todos Santos barrio, he has quenas, zampoñas, ruco pingullo, guagua pingullo, pingullo de hueso de pelícano, zambomba, pallas, rondadoras and all sorts of flutes. He sells instruments from space 15 at CEMUART, and all are signed.  You can also buy his CD.

OSC – The Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca will play their 2nd concert of Season 2, 2016 this Fri, at 20:00 in the Catedral Vieja (Luis Cordero y Sucre).  The program will include “Auroral, Escena Campestre” by Ecuadorian composer Salvador Bustamante Celi and the Sinfonía “Romántica” by Austrian Anton Bruckner.

Danza nacional en Portugal – The Wairapamushca Allu Llacta dance troupe from the U of Cuenca participated in the 32 Festival Folklórico International in the Azores Islands as part of a July and Aug. tour in Portugal.  The troupe is now organizing the III Festival Nacional for CIOFF (Congreso Internacional de Festivales Folklóricos) (And I’ll be damned if I’m going to translate something that simple for you.) which will be in the Teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz this coming Nov.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Indecisión incidirá en avance de obra (Indecision will affect construction progress) –  One of 8 patrimonial houses on Ordóñez Lasso was demolished on Mon., and the other seven are waiting for Mayor Cabrera to submit them for the consideration of the Cantonal Council.  The Comisión de Áreas Históricas is not in agreement with the demolitions.  The houses are currently in the way of widening Lasso and would make it impossible to build the bike lanes, sidewalks, and median.

Árboles (trees) – EMAC EP is inspecting eucalyptus trees along the banks of the rivers to determine their condition and if they represent a hazard.  The evaluation includes if the tree is leaning, its closeness to the river, age, height and soil conditions. These trees can weigh from 5-14 tons.  Those in danger of falling will be cut down.  (You wouldn’t want 10 tons of tree falling on you, would you?)

Airport – TAME restarted flights to and from Cuenca today with a 7:05 from Quito that landed in Cuenca at 8:00.  TAME has a promotion for a $58 round trip to Quito or Guayaquil with conditions that the nonrefundable ticket be issued within 24 hours of the reservation.  LATAM, the other airline serving Cuenca will resume service on Mon, 19/9.

Tranvía – Coronel Tálbot in the 3 de Nov. market area will be reopened tomorrow, but Miguel Heredia will be closed to complete work on the Tranvía platform.  Traffic cops will be controlling the area and bus lines 3, 4, 13, 22, 27, 28 and 29 will need to change their routes to turn onto Coronel Tálbot.  This opening has been delayed 50 days from the schedule presented in May.  Benigno Malo, General Torres and Padre Aguirre are also delayed.  In the sector of the Casa de las Posadas, sewer pipes are being installed and work on water mains will cause outages.  Work on Sangurima has been impeded due to archeological remains in the area of El Gallinazo.  The project is at 79.83% completion with 76% of the money disbursed.

“Paquito” is in town – The puppet created by the National Transit Department of the National Police talked to people walking in the area of parque Calderón about traffic and personal safety and the panic button.  You can go to the UPC (police station) closest to you and register for the service which will call the police when you push 5 on your phone.

Road work – A new lane is being built at km 92 of the vía Cuenca-Molleturo-El Empalme to replace the one lost in a landslide.  This road connects Cuenca with the province of Guayas.  Work on the viá Turi-Gullanhaa-Tarqui is continuing and includes stabilizing the slope near the community of El Verde.
