Articles about –

“La Frastera” – This 45 minute play “su público objetivo son niñas u niños entre 4 y 100 años de edad” (Whose target audience are girls and boys between 4 and 100 years old.) is the dramatization of a common story from Michoacan, México and similar to the Cinderella story.  Actress Eloísa Ríos plays 6 characters.  It will be performed in Cuenca mañana, el viernes y el sábado at 20:00 in the sala “Alfonson Carrasco Vintimilla.”  It will be at Sono Centro Cultural (Borrero 6-83 y Pres. Córdova) on the 20 & 21/1 at 20:00.  Cost at both locations: $5.00.  For reservations, go to rebanadito@fastmail.com or 098 590 8730. The first 10 people reserving for performances at at Sono get a free shot of mezcal michoacano.

Ballet andino – El Ballet Andino Kausanakunchi, part of the Cultural Unit of the U. of Cuenca, is registering people who want to audition to be part of the folk dance troupe.  They rehearse every day.  (That should keep the lazy ones out and I’m sure that’s the first screening even if it’s self screening.)  For more information, go to the Unidad de Cultura in the old School of Medicine building on 12 de abril y Solano, around the corner from the Banco Pichincha.  For U. of Cuenca students, participation in the dance group would fulfil their physical education and community service hours.

Bienal – 5 artists are showing at the colegio (high school) Benigno Malo.  One of them uses the colors of the various political parties to create a bar chart to show how many seats went to each party in elections since 1998.  In addition to the pattern of colors, it also shows the evolution of politics.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Invierno acelera deterioro de vías (Winter accelerates road deterioration) – (I think the seasonal bad roads stories are here with landslide stories on the way.)

Boring campaigns – Experts said that the campaign in its first few days “es aburrida” (is boring – your word for the day).  They said that the parties are framing their campaigns on old 20th century themes and there isn’t anything new.  (Beware of wishing for something new and different – you might wind up like the US.)

Alcohol – Prices of European alcohol have not dropped much since sellers are still using pre-EU agreement stock although large distributors reduced their European stock in anticipation of the agreement.   The Ecuadorian alcohol industry is worried that lowered prices in European products will affect the sales of local products.  The reduction of liquor duties to 0% on 1/1 will result in lowering the retail price by 50-60% which will probably start to be noticed towards the end of the month.

Bonds – The Ministry of Finance issued $1 billion in 10 year bonds with an interest rate of 9.125%.  The issue was a success since there was $2.2 billion of interest in the bonds.  The last issue was on 8/12 for $750 million at 9.65%.

Gangs – In a 6 province operation called Jaque Mate 1, the National Police broke up 10 gangs and detained 70 people for investigation.  17 were arrested in Azuay.  The gangs robbed homes and businesses, engaged in micro trafficking of drugs, robberies of vehicle accessories and rustling.

Vote 2017 page –

Rallies – The approved locations for political rallies will be the plazas Cívica, El Otorongo, Santo Domingo, y La Merced. Where you can post posters and billboards is also regulated and the fine for violations can be from $14-28.  You cannot put publicity on public light poles, you can’t paint buildings or use glues to attach posters, and you can’t hang it on balconies of historical buildings.

Vulnerable groups – Voting will be facilitated for vulnerable groups – the pregnant, elderly and disabled.  These populations can have voting assistance, preferential voting (go to the front of the line), and voting at home which is available for people over 75% physically disabled.  Nationally, 883 voters have registered for this service, 111 in Azuay.

Cancer prevention – SOLCA’s Prevention and Early Diagnosis of Cancer Program moved its mobile unit to the parking lot for the Centro Comercial Los Nogales (av. 12 de Abril y San Roque) with hours starting at 7:30.

Deportes –

Mountain biking – Este domingo will be the 4th edition of the Gran Fondo Cicla.  It’s open to clubs, stores, teams and the bicycling public.  The ride will leave from Cicla (Remigio Tamariz 1-44 y Federico Proaño) at 8:30.  The 100 km route will be to El Valle, San Bartolo, Chordeleg and back to Cuenca.  Register before el viernes at Cicla.  Cost: $5.00.  Cicla is organizing 2 more events this year.

Discuentos y compras –

Comandato – Buy a Suzuki motorcycle and get a free cellular phone. (You can call or text all your friends while you’re driving away from the dealership.)

And that´s all for today so Hasta Mañana –

Jeanne
