Articles about –

Sinfónica – The Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca (OSC) has finished the competition for a new conductor.  The professional and academic qualifications and a demonstration of directing have been given by the 4 aspirants.  The results will be given in a few days.

The OSC will present a concert on Fri. with guest conductor Yuri Ilynov and violinist Wolfgang David at 20:00 in the teatro Pumapungo.  The program will be Concierto para Violin y Orquesta Opus 53 by Dvorák and Scheherezade by Rimski-Kórsakov.

The Victor Manuel Albornoz Library – The library is in the Pumapungo and has a collection with local history and patrimony as well as a periodical collection.  It is used by students and teachers for research.

Photo albumAn digital photo album of Cuenca, “Sueños de Antaño” (Dreams of Yesteryear) is an interactive cultural project that will collect old photos of Cuenca and its people.  The organizers are asking contributors to bring their images tomorrow at 19:00 in the Museo Pumapungo or to send the images to govii00007@gmail.com. There will be classic music and pasillos by pianist Maricarmen Valdivieso and Juan Cordero, Cuenca’s HIstorian will talk about the history of the city.  (I have the feeling that none of you will be contributing your old family photos – that 1954 picture of you right after you won the no-hands blueberry pie eating contest at the town’s 4th of July picnic isn’t what they’re looking for.)

“Cine de la Diferencia” Festival – Double features will be presented Thurs. at 18:00 in the Salón Pumapungo.  The films will show the reality of the LGBTI community.  Tomorrow’s (Thu) films will be “A la carte” about a gay chef, and “Gran Escuela” about the emotional and sexual conflicts of the students at a supposedly elite school.  There will also be a drag queen presentation.  (Or you could wait for New Years for the guys in drag who block the streets and ask motorists for money for the viudas (widows).)

Otras cosas –

Titular – Viviendas, ‘obstáculos’ en obra vial (Houses, obstacles in road work) – The City Council will decide whether to demolish 7 houses on Ordónez Lasso.  The patrimonial houses are impeding the construction of bike paths, sidewalks and planting strips.  The project is 50% complete.

Subsidies – The Cantonal Council approved  $1,357,000 for financing the 50% transportation subsidy for “grupos vulnerables” (vulnerable groups – your words for the day).   This will be added to the $1,496,200 that EMOV EP will give for a total of $2,850,000.  (So all you seniors can still get on a bus for half price.)  The amount gives an average of $600 per urban bus.  (Those are the red and blue ones.  I think the green ones are intercantonal, and the fancy painted ones, interprovincial.  This is your trivia for the day.)  The canton’s payment will be with money originally intended to pay a debt to ETAPA.  (Robbing Peter to pay Paul is not a good sign for the economy.)

Refugee petitions – The applications for refugee status in Ecuador during the period Jan. to June fell 20% from 2015 to 2016 or from about 500 to 400 per month.  UN Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi said that 7 million people have been displaced in Colombia and hoped that the peace process will put an end to the displacement.

Business page – “Morena” to open on av. del Estadio on 14/7.  The space will be a type of bar pub with night entertainment, a bar, disco and restaurant.  (Sounds like it’s going to be full of young, hip, affluent Ecuadorians – maybe with an early shift of old, hip, affluent gringos.)

And that´s all for today so Hasta Mañana –

Jeanne
