New restaurants combine healthy eating with cultural themes; Fashion project for the animals

Propuestas nutritivas y saludables – There is a new trend for restaurants to offer fresh, sustainable food to diners who think about what they eat and its effect on the planet. Vive Green has locations in the food courts at the Mall del Río and the Millenium Plaza. The owner, María Augusta Rodas developed her menu with plates that were born from important moments in her life. <So birth would be a dish featuring okra?> The plates are assembled from a bar with more than 25 ingredients, sourced from local providers in San Joaquín. Prices of almuerzos start at $4.99 and include a salad or wrap, a protein, fresh fruit, and a drink without sugar.

El Huerto serves Mediterranean inspired food from its location on Remigio Crespo in the La Paz park zone. Owner/chef Juan Fernando Córdova grows rosemary, lavender, tomatoes, basil, mint, chilis and hierba Luisa which he uses in his dishes and drinks. The menu includes salads, hot quinoa bowls, sauteed shrimp, pureed zapallo and fresh habas, crunchy sweet potato with an eggplant and yogurt sauce, pulled beef ribs, pureed ripe plantain, and more. Most of the ingredients come from producers in the south of Ecuador. Diners can eat in a beautiful garden under the branches of giant trees.

Vecindad de El Chavo restaurant recreates the set from the popular television show.

“Vecindad de El Chavo” en un rincón cuencano – The Centro Histórico has places that combine food, technology, and art to attract people. At the theme restaurant “Vecindad de El Chavo” on Padre Aguirre and Gran Colombia, visitors are transported to the neighborhood of the TV program starring Roberto Gomez Bolaños. <The show was about kids in a neighborhood, with the kids played by adults.> The menu includes tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos chimichangas, salchipapas, hot dogs, and of course, Chavo´s ham sandwich.

At VRooms at the intersection of calle Larga y Benigno Malo, you can play on classic and the newest generation videogames which enjoying food and drink. VRooms celebrated its 3d anniversary and has grown with the addition of a bar and restaurant on the ground floor. Río Park is in the El Vado barrio and is a meeting point for emerging artists and visitors interested in urban art and contemporary culture. It is part of the Ruta del Arte which includes other creators and galleries in the sector. Río Park offers workshops, ferias, and “pop art sessions” where artists develop performances and share their creative processes with the public.

Obras de 12 artistas en Etafashion – Etafashion is presenting its 2nd edition of ReinventArte which articulates art, style, culture and sustainability with theme of respect towards animals. The project will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sales of the pieces to the Fundación Cóndor Andino and the Fundación Acción Animal. In Cuenca, a work of Víctor Hugo Torres, “Cándida albicans: estructuras reticulares de la simbiosis microbioma,” (Candida albicans: reticular structures of microbiome symbiosis) will be shown. <It sounds more like a thesis for a biology degree than a piece of art.> The project will close in September with an exhibit in the Capilla Del Hombre in Quito.
