Niño Viajero tours city markets, Chordeleg earrings to Miss Universe pageant, Ruta Patrimonial visits Cuenca’s ‘hippie market’

Exposición – There is an exhibit of paintings of children at play in the Salón del Pueblo of the CCE.

Mural – “Esta es mi ciudad” is a mural on the lower level of the multifamiliares del IESS, diagonal from the Centenario. The mural shows the view of the Barranco from the Tomebamba as it was in old photos.

Ruta Patrimonial – There will be an event el sábado, 24/11 a las 10:00 in the plaza Santa Ana (more commonly known as the hippie plaza) to activate the patrimonial zones in Cuenca. The event will have music, graffiti, a fashion parade and a rap battle.

Chordeleg is famous for its silver jewelry.

Join the parade – La Caminata de los Patrimonios (The Heritage Walk) has health as a theme this year. It will be el 1/12 starting from calle Rafael María Arízaga at El Rollo or Picota on av. Huayna Cápac to the parque de La Libertad. The walk is to boost the campaign to prevent skin cancer and to generate awareness of the importance of Cuenca’s heritage. There will be a medical brigade which will provide free evaluations for skin cancer. Various pharmacies will be giving out samples of sun screen.

Titular – El monasterio de las Conceptas, premiado (The monastery of the Conceptas, awarded) – The Monasterio de la Inmaculada Concepción, founded in 1599; and Gerardo Machado Clavijo, musician and artist, were selected for the Cuenca Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad award which will be presented 1/12. The nuns received what was then the best house in the city from señora Leonor Ordóñez in 1599 to house the order.

Candongos – Silver filagree earrings from Chordeleg will be presented to the Miss Universe contestants for the pageant el 8/12 in Atlanta. This “exportación” is part of promoting Chordeleg which was designated a “Ciudad Creativa” (Creative City) by UNESCO on an international level. <I wonder if all those misses will also be carrying Ecuadorian roses?> The chandelier type earrings were donated by artisans from Chordeleg and have a cost of about $100 locally, and about $350 abroad. In the past, these earrings were used almost solely by women who wore the pollera. <The pleated and embroidered velvet skirts. That might as well be your word for the day.>

Niño Viajero – The Niño Viajero will start his traditional visits to public and private institutions in Cuenca el próximo 2/12. He will start at City Hall and then to the provincial government building. There will be special emphasis on the mercados this year with his visits on the following schedule:
7/12 – El Arenal
15/12 – Centro Comercial Municipal 9 de Octubre
16/12 – 9 de Octubre
17/12 – 27 de Febrero
18/12 – 12 de Abril
19/12 – 3 de Nobiembre
22/12 – 10 de Agosto

The godparents of the Niño have traditionally been the Policía Nacional and the Army, but this year they will be the mercado 10 de Agosto and the Hogar Miguel de León.

Use of Robots – Out of the 132 indjustries affiliated with the Cámara de Industrias, Producción y Empleo, only two use robots in their manufacturing processes. Tarpuq assembles circuit boards, and Graiman.
