President Rafael Correa helped dedicate the new National University of Education (UNAE) in Azoguez on Monday. The university, which opened with 24 students in March, is intended to improve teacher education in Ecuador from the elementary to the university level. UNAE is one of four national universities that the government calls “millennium institutions.”

According to Correa and Ecuador Minister of Education Augusto Espinosa, the university will have 2,000 students by September and will include an international faculty.

According to Espinosa, UNAE is intended to bring Ecuador’s educational system up to international standards. “This institution will lead the way to making our education programs not just the best in Latin America but also competitive with all programs around the world.”
