Otras cosas –

Titular – La sostenibilidad el IESS tambalea ( Sustainability of the IESS is shakey) – Business leaders, employees, and retirees met yesterday to issue a notice that the sustainability of the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social (IESS) is at risk and if reforms are not made, it will only survive 5 more years. The presidents of the Quito Chamber of Commerce and the Frente Unitario de Trabajadores (a workers’ group) both called for the formation of a non-political tripartate commission to analyze how to fix IESS. All 3 sections – Health, Worker’s Comp. and Retirement have been dipping into their reserve funds to pay current benefits.

IESS – The IESS started “Teléfono Rojo” (Red phone), a new service for members who can’t get their prescriptions filled at the pharmacy. If your medicine isn’t available, pick up the phone next to the pharmacy. You’ll automatically be connected to a call center. Tell them you didn’t get your medicine and the call center will send one of the “Chaleco Rojo” (Red Vest) customer service people to help you. <Who knows. You might even get one that speaks English in case you forgot to bring your facilitator.>

Odebrecht – Experts in the criminal investigation unit of the Policía Nacional are going through a pen drive given to the police by an ex worker and apparent confidant of Ricardo Rivera, VP Jorge Glas’ uncle. The pen drive was “opened” <heck if I know the official word for getting the info out of a pen drive, whatever that is> in the presence of attorneys for the accused, criminal investigators, and representatives from the Prosecutor’s office. The 30 GV gizmo has 13 GV of information including photos, documents and private correspondence. The president of Agrícola Clemensa S.A. confessed to illegal association with the ex manager of Transporte de Petroecuador to transfer 300,000 Euros and $250,000 from Odebrecht to get the contract for the Poliducto Pascuales-Cuenca.

Earthquake Donations – You can make donations to the victims of the Mexican earthquake in the restaurante La Catrina (Paucarbamba 5-75 y Tomillos). Iván Sánchez, the restaurant owner, is from Cuernavaca in Morelos, one of the hardest hit areas. He is asking for canned and dry goods, coffee, sugar, cookies and crackers and supplies such as blankets, work gloves, lanterns and candles. You can bring your contributions until el domingo from 10-21:00. <You know the drill – same stuff you donated after the Manta quake.> The donations will be combined with those from other cities and transported by Aeroméxico.

Mexico aid – Ecuador sent a team of rescue firefighters to help. The Cities of Quito and Guayaquil are also sending search and rescue teams and 7 tons of equipment.

Mercado 10 de Agosto – The market on Calle Larga will change the glass roof covering the center of the market. Second floor produce and prepared food vendors have complained that the direct sunshine affected their stock.

México – The number of deaths has risen to 273 with many more missing. Government secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong <The last name in the list hits you by surprise, doesn’t it.> estimated a little more than 100 are still missing, and that search efforts won’t end until those missing are located.

Brasil – The Supreme Court, by a 10-1 vote, handed the Cámara de Diputados a complaint against Pres. Temer who the Attorney General has accused of obstruction of justice and illegal association. The Chamber of Deputies has to decide whether to open a criminal trial against the president. The Brazilian constitution provides that a sitting president can only be prosecuted if authorized by the lower chamber which has already blocked an earlier charge of corruption against Temer.
