Odebrecht – Records of VP Jorge Glas were found on his uncle Ricardo Rivera’s computer. Two of the 3 files were related to the strategic sectors that were Glas’ charge and were part of the case against him. Glas repeated that he didn’t know his uncle was supposedly the negotiator on public projects with Odebrecht and got $13 million in commissions. <Would it be an unusually distant family for Glas to not know what his uncle was doing?

Petroecuador – The Prosecutor in the Petroecuador case confirmed that there was a second seizure of about $2 million from the account of the ex-manager of Petroecuador, Álex Bravo. He, Carlos Pareja Yannuzzelli (Capaya), ex- minister of Hydrocarbons, and 14 others are facing 5 year sentences for bribery.

School materials campaign – The Corporación Juventud Independiente (Independent Youth Corporation) is organizing the “Seamos útiles” (Let’s be useful) campaign to collect back to school packages to give out in rural areas to families of limited means. They are having music, theater, martial arts, and a Motos Harley show. <So unleash your inner outlaw. Or don’t – I think that was bad advice especially if your inner outlaw is now a petulant old man.> It will be el sábado, 2/9 desde las 12:00 at Iron Horse (Remigio Tamariz 2-24 y Federico Proaño). Admission: a back to school kit, new if possible. <If you’re interested, the papelerias will have lists of what’s needed for each grade and for which school. You want the lists for escuelas fiscales (public schools) <since poor families can’t send their kids to private schools.>

Road changes – The work on the Felipe II bridge in the Yanuncay Parish is done and roads are changing direction. The bridge, formerly north to south, is now 2 way, as is calle Agustín Cueva from Remigio Crespo to 10 de Agosto. 27 de Febrero has a one block stretch that is one-way from Bernardo de Legarda to Solano. Calle Miguel de Santiago will change direction making it the entrance to the Bilingue barrio from the Felipe II bridge. You get out of the barrio via Bernardo de Legarda. Another set of roads includes Tirso de Molina as the way to get from 1 de Mayo to calle Bartolomé de las Casas, and Francisco de Quevedo will change direction and go towards Isabel la Católica. <I bet confusing even if you live in the area.>

Bus robbery – Armed robbers posing as passengers, boarded a Cooperativa de Transporte Azuay bus from Shumiral in Ponce Enríquez to Cuenca yesterday and suddenly stood up and started shooting to scare the driver and passengers. The driver was forced to stop in the area of Naranjal-Tamarindo and pick up more thieves who stole valuables from the 30 passengers as well as luggage and parcels being shipped by bus. <Que tenga un buen viaje.>
