I know Cuencanos don’t do cardinal directions, but I’m amazed at the number of gringos who also don’t. How did you manage to navigate freeways in the US?>.

Articles about –

Literature on-line – Information and Communications Technology was a topic at the XIII Encuentro sobre Literatura Ecuatoriana y latinoamericana. <I couldn’t understand much more than that.> But it seems as if young people are stretching the boundaries of literature since new technology allows the incorporation of more media. <Would you want your book to have a soundtrack? If you’re reading about a character catching a plane would you like to hear airport noises?>

Incubator – There was a meeting Thurs. for people interesting in being part of an Incubator for Cultural Projects.

Otras cosas –

TAME – the airline is increasing its flights to the Galápagos. Starting on 11/12, there will be new non-stop flights from Quito to Baltra Island on lunes, viernes y domingo. They will stop flying Quito-Guayaquil-Galápago. <Let’s hope they get it right and don’t put their Friday flight to the Galapagos at 10 am and their return flight on Monday at 5 pm.> They will keep the flights into San Cristóbal.

Climate change – The high temperatures, extreme levels of ultraviolet radiation, and low river levels are effects of global warming caused by greenhouse gases. Ecuador ratified the Paris Accord 5 mo. ago. One of its objectives was to learn measures to reduce greenhouse gases through mitigation, adaptation, and resilience. The country committed to actions such as good watershed management, hydrometeorological monitering, strengthening risk management training and creating carbon sinks through reforestation. A recent study concluded that 55% of the pollution in Cuenca is from vehicles, 16% from industry and 15% from the residential sector.
A representative from the Instituto Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología confirmed that the institute has declared La Niña is coming. The recent high temperatures and UV levels were due to dry winds that eliminated the cloudiness. UV safety ranges are: 1 & 2 – low; 3 & 4 – moderate; 5 to 7 – protection needed; and above 7 – extreme. Cuenca had days over 13.

Healthy gardens – One of the projects of the Ministerio de Salud Pública is a demonstration garden on av. Huayna Cápac across from the Complejo Arqueológico Pumapungo. The crops include quinua, oca, white carrot <parsnips?>, avocado, camote, and black corn.

Accident – A driver of a school van hit a cow on the vía Cumbe-Loja. 2 of the teachers being transported were injured and the rest unharmed. The cow died. <One of the road hazards here. Tourists – you need to drive very carefully on the highways (I’m talking the Panamerican Highway, E35) – dogs, little tiny school kids, other people, livestock, speed bumps, on-coming traffic in your lane, curvy roads, sudden changes from asphalt to gravel and back.>

Internacional –

Venezuela – An agricultural association reported that domestic food production in Venezuela is only enough to feed 30% of the population. He called price control “un error garrafal” (a monumental error – your words for the day) <Only because I like the way garrafal rolls off the tongue.>

Chile – The Attorney General is investigating the President of the Senate for alleged participation in trafficking in migrants and bribery. <That would be a new low for a politician.>

Man-Volkswagon – Euro5 buses – at Autobahn, Gil Ramirez Dávalos y El Pedregal. <Did the dealership order a lot of these in anticipation of selling the bus companies their new fleets? Unfortunately, they got bit in the butt for planning ahead on this one. Unless somehow the local diesel is discovered to be not damaging to the engines after all.>
