The Señor de los Milagros Church in the historic Quito neighborhood of La Loma, a structure built in the 17th century and damaged by an earthquake last year, has been completely restored, Ecuadorian officials said Thursday.

“Restoration included the consolidation and strengthening of supporting walls, woodwork rehabilitation and waterproofing surfaces,” the Quito city government said in a statement.
“Maintenance work has been done on gutters and rainwater pipes, along with conservation of paintings on the ceiling and interior walls of the historic chapel built in the 1600s,” city officials said.
The $100,000 project was led by the Metropolitan Heritage Institute and focused on repairing damage to the building caused by earthquakes in 2016.

The chapel, in the heart of Quito’s colonial district and declared a Cultural Heritage Site 40 years ago, was built in a traditional fashion with a stone foundation, supporting walls and arches in brick and adobe, and a wood shell.
The single-nave chapel of austere architecture has a simple facade on which two pillars flank the main entrance.
