Editor’s note: How would you rate the world’s top travel destinations? The Flight Network, one the largest international travel websites, asked the question to 800 travel professionals. Among their top choices was Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands. Here’s what the editors had to say about the islands. To see the full list, click here.

The Galapagos Islands are a world of uncommon treasures: animal species found nowhere else in the world, blue waters teeming with life, and phenomenal island views. This volcanic archipelago of 19 islands off Ecuador’s coast are known for their incredible amount of species that influenced the work of Charles Darwin. And sailing through them is a bucket list item that tops the list of explorers and seafarers alike.

Sailing through the Pacific Ocean waters and venturing around these islands will bring playful seals, majestic tortoises, and colourful birds into your world. Each of the islands has their own unique environment and flair, giving travellers the opportunity to check off multiple things on their bucket list (and maybe even add a few new ones along the way). World-known for its remoteness and uniqueness, this adventure is one of a lifetime.

Getting There

The Galapagos Islands are isolated in their geographic destination, but still popular for international travellers. The most direct travel into the Islands is through connecting flights from Quito and Guayaquil on mainland Ecuador. The Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito or the José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil offer daily flights to Baltra Island or San Cristóbal Island. You can then find transport from the airport directly to your previously booked cruise or hop onto public transportation to be taken to your hotel. Sailing adventures will begin from various port locations in the Islands, depending on the choice of travel organization.
