Ongoing agenda events –

Cuenca Tatoo Convention – The convention in the Convention Center at the Mall del Río will run from today to Domingo.  If you have tattoos you’re especially proud of, there’s a contest.  (One little snake or rose or whatever’s on your butt probably won’t win you anything.)  Cost:  $5.00.

Articles about –

Jorge Dávila Vázquez – the author who won the Eugenio Espejo National Prize was honored at an event in the CCE.

Festival de Teatro – The Escenarios del Mundo opened on Wed night with a parade in the rain.  (So everybody’s make-up ran.  Did I mention the marchers were in costume?)

Dance festival – the 2nd Encuentro Internacional de Danza Folklórica opened Wed. night and closed Fri with a final gala at 19:30 in the Teatro Sucre.

Storytelling – The event which also included horror films and stories continued today in the ex Escuela Central.

CCE’s – the group of CCE’s of the south met yesterday to activate the Mancomunidad Cultural del Austro.  They will share experiences, bring the public into the cultural sphere, discover new talent and form a network of libraries and museums.

(Have you noticed that each event gets about 3 articles – to announce it, to give details, and then to review it?  It seems as if there are actually fewer events going on)

Otras cosas –

Titular –  Gobierno pondrá a los directores (Government will appoint directors) –  The Assembly approved a law about Social Security for the Armed Forces and National Police.

SRI – The SRI has published a list of 320 businesses and individuals they consider fictitious.  These entities have made transactions of $1,830 millions.  SRI has asked them to clarify inconsistencies between the amounts of receipts they reported vs the amounts on the receipts reported by their 18,000 customers.  (So the moral of this story is don’t mess with the taxman.)

Bicycle study – LlactaLAB – Ciudades Sustenables of the U. of Cuenca is contucting a survey of bicycles users to fine out what the problems are and generate solutions. It is working to identify and survey organizations of bicycle users and then have a web site where other cyclists can respond.  The surveys will be done around noviembre y diciembre.

Street cleaning – (this is your civics article for today) – EMAC EP is the “Empressa Municipal de Aseo” (Municipal Cleaning Company) with responsibility for collecting garbage and keeping 815 km. of streets clean.  256 employees sweep and clean streets, starting at 5:00.  Streets in El Centro are swept 5 times a day but only once or twice a week in other sectors.  184 employees collect garbage.  There are 195 park workers who provide maintenance to each green space every 36 days.  The organic garbage collected from the mercados is composted.  (How cool is that?) Cuenca has the highest coverage area for garbage collection in the country with 98%.

EMAC has sent out 400 notices so far this year for infractions.  These include – not putting the right things in the recycling bag, putting garbage out when it’s not your garbage day, and not retracting the garbage grill.  In public spaces infractions include – not picking up your pet’s (that apostrophe could go after the “s,” too, but who cares.) poop and throwing garbage out of cars.  Fines can be from 10-400% of the Basic Salary.  (I imagine dumping a load of construction debris in parque Calderón would get you a pretty stiff fine.)

Road closure – Ordóñez Lasso between Los Pinos and Los Cerezos will be closed to traffic to speed up the improvement work.  Work on the phone conduits, sidewalks and green spaces is planned to be done by the end of the month.  Alternatives include El Tejar and Paseo 3 de Noviembre.

Christmas – the Niño Viajero will start his visits on 29/10.  The Pase del Niño organizations will meet on 27/10 to decide on this year’s parade route.  (Poor guys – they won’t even know what streets will be open given the past histories of deadlines on the Tranvía project.)

“Mercart Food Garden” – The third edition of this event will be on 14/10 from 12-21:00, 15/10 from 12-21:00, & 16/10 from 12-20:00.  This year’s focus is gastronomic with 65 exhibitors from Quito, Loja, Guayaquil and Cuenca.  There are also home and garden decorating exhibitors.  It will be at the “Casa del Río de Quinta Lucrecia.”

Fiestas de Azogues – There will be 90 events for the 196th year since the Independence of Azogues taking place from 15/10 to 26/11.

Amenidades –
