Teatro – “El Misterio de la Cantina” (The Mystery of the Cantina) performed by the Kuso Clowns will be Saturday a las 20:00 in the Imay Centro Cultural (El Batán 4-70 y El Oro). Cost: $4, $5, & $8.

Cine – An experimental film meeting opens mañana and runs to el próximo viernes. Go to their Facebook page: God/Art www.facebook.com/godart.club/ for a schedule of the 20 films that will be shown. The meeting will start mañana at 19:00 in the Teatro Sucre with “Correspondencias” (Portugal); el lunes at las 17:00, “Yo me creo” (Spain) at the Museo de la Ciudad and “Parábola del Retorno” (Colombia) in the teatro Sucre, at 19:00, “El día Nuevo (Argentina) in el Sucre and “Un secreto en la caja (Ecuador) in the Park Cuenca. <If you can go to a movie in Spanish you can surely translate the title for yourself.>
Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca – The symphony played Fri. in the teatro Pumapungo with guest conductor William Vergara Saula and guest pianist Claudia Knafo and singer Vanessa Freire.
Charla – A talk by German artist Till Ansgar Baumhauer was Fri. at the MMAM. He led a tour through his exhibit which also closed hoy. <Remember hoy? Today? I’m hoping if you see it regularly you’ll wind up remembering it without trying.>
Danza – Terry Araujo gave a seminar to the Compañía de Danza Contemporánea at the U. of Cuenca. The seminar closed with 2 public performances in the Plazoleta del Centenario a las 11:00 & 17:00. <Pass an ordinance and artists are going to take over empty real estate all over Cuenca. A cultural step above the guy in SF Fishermans’ Wharf who looks like a bush when he’s crouched down. He jumps up and scares tourists.>

Titular – Nobel de la Paz chino muere bajo custodia policial (Chinese Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Dies in Police Custody) – Liu Xiaobo was in custody when he died at a hospital of liver cancer. He had spent the last 9 years in prison and was released to a guarded hospital last month due to his illness. He did not get his last wishes which were to get medical attention outside of China and to die in a free country. <Could they have taken him to the Ecuadorian Embassy? Aren’t embassies considered territory of that country and not the host country?>
Restored houses – The Casa de Los Murales on Simón Bolívar y Tarqui was opened yesterday. The patrimonial house, built in 1917, will house an area for health services, offices for the Transparency Commission, and other areas to serve Cuencanos. The 150 year old Casa Jesús Arriaga or Casa del Arco on Loja y 1 de Mayo and the Casa de la Lira will be the next restorations to be completed. <My house in the US was older than 1917 – but it had a low historical rating.>
Puerto Posorja – Construction on this new port will start on 30/8. In 2016, Ecuador signed a contract with DP World Investments BV, a Dubai shipping company that also operates major ports, to build a deep-water port at Posorja in Guayas. The $1.2 billion project is expected to take 3 years to build and generate $3.5 billion in income for the country. The new port will save 8 hours of sailing.
Plan de Desarrollo 2017-2021 (Development Plan 2017-2021) – the Government presented the National Development plan for 2017-2021 with two fundamental pillars: environmental sustainability and national development. The plan also includes the proposed budget which will be considered by the National Assembly this month. It has 90 days to be implemented based on the agreements.
Volcán Reventador – Yesterday, the volcano spewed columns of vapor and ash 500 m. above the rim of the crater. Early Thursday morning, there was an explosion of gas and ash, and chunks of incandescent material rolled down the hill on all sides reaching 800 m. below the rim.
Taxi protest – The protest was called off after the UCTTA met with Mayor Cabrera. Cabrera explained that a lot of what the taxistas want is controlled by the Agencia Nacional de Tránsito and the Policía Nacional.
Garbage collection – If you put your garbage out on non-collection days, you can be fined from 10-100% of the Salario Básico Unificado <which is $375>. Put organic waste in the black bags and recyclables in the blue bags. <And I hope you are all being good citizens and using the blue bags properly and regularly.>
Registro de la Propiedad de Cuenca (Cuenca Property Register) – The Registro will have a new 6 story building with 2 floors of underground parking on avenidas Isabel la Catolica y 12 de Octubre. The first rock was placed yesterday. <Must be analogous to the first shovelful of dirt. I wonder if they paint the rock gold and put a ribbon on it?>
Gualaquiza – The canton in Morona Santiago wants to increase tourism. It is arranging tours from $25 to $145 for up to 2 days including lodging (except for the $25 tour), guide, food, entrance fees to tourist attractions, shamanic guidance and cleanings. Cangrejo naranjaleño – CORVEL Restaurant and the Crabbers of Naranjal are associating to put on the “Primer Festival del Cangrejo, Del Manglar a la Mesa” (First Crab Festival, From Mangrove to Table) este sábado from 10-16:00 in the Portal Artesanal (Huayna Cápac y Bolívar). Crab small plates will be $5.00.
