Hola, Todos –

Today´s agenda events –chl jeanne logo

Jazz – A contemporary concert today at 19:00 in the Teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz with Guanaco, Da Pawn and the debut of La Madre Tirana.

Upcoming agenda events –

“Festival Virgen de La Merced – The El Vecino barrio is organizing 3 days of homage to the Virgen.  Today (Viernes) there is un evento festivo (a festive event – your words for the day, and may they apply to all your days); tomorrow there will be a paja toquilla (straw) exhibit (implies more than just hats), a crafts fair and an homage from the FF.AA. (Fuerzas Armadas – Armed Forces) to the virgin: and Sunday there will be a tour of patrimonial houses and other events.

Pasillo – There will be an artistic event for the Diá del Pasillo (national music) on 30/9 at 18:00 in the auditorium of the Ciencias Químicas at the U. of Cuenca.

Evento – The Youth Choir of the Conservatorio “José María Rodríguez” will give two concerts on 27 & 28/9 in the teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz.

Articles about –

OSC – The Symphony Orchestra will perform tonight at 20:00 in the teatro Pumapungo with two clarinetists from Loja playing the “Concierto para dos clarinetes” by Crommer.  Also on the program are Beethoven’s 5th and “El Moldava” by Smetana.

Mancomunidad del Austro – The association of CCEs in the south will be able to coordinate common projects, exchange artistic activities, and benefit from the association.  (I think the new director in Azuay is a very ambitious man who’s probably eyeing the national director position eventually.)

“Cuenca en Cuentos” (Cuenca in Stories) – The teatro Barojo will present stories of different people and characters that are part of the everyday stories of Cuenca.  The prouctions will be on the 2nd and 3d Thursdays of each month in the “Teatrina” at the Casa de la Provincia (the old Buen Pastor convent on the west end of San Blas Plaza).  The series started with “Atacocos” who was a mendigo (beggar) who spoke in verse.  Other cuentas will be of “Juana de la Catedral,” “Carlitos, de la bicicleta,” and “María, la guagua.”  Cost: $5.00 with tickets available in the Casa de la Provincia.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Persiste violencia y acoso sexual (Violence and sexual harassment persist) – A survey conducted by the department for Planificación y Gestión por la Equidad Social y de Género (Planning and Management for Social and Gender Equity) found high incidences of violence and sexual harassment in Cuenca. The most common victims of sexual harassment are women between 17 & 25 in public spaces such as buses, parks, streets and the river banks.  (So where can a woman go where she won’t be harassed?  Stay at home 24/7?)  The survey also showed that 95% of victims of violence or harassment did not report it to authorities.  (Maybe they took matters into their own hands and did a Lorena Bobbitt – who I’ve been told is Cuencana, or at least Ecuadorian.)

Día sin Auto – In Cuenca, there was a stand where people could borrow bikes between 7:30 and 18:30 yesterday.  (I wonder if the city got all the bikes back?  You probably had to leave sus datos (your data – contact into) to check out a bike.)

Interview – Edgar Andrade, commercial manager of LATAM Airlines was interviewed. Currently LATAM has two flights in and out of Cuenca daily.  He said they had and have no issues with the runway and that they land the Airbus A319 with no problems. Andrade said that LATAM is flying into Cuenca profitably and is offering promotions with fares of $59 and $69 to attract travellers back to flying.  Currently they have no plans to increase the number of flights or fly internationally.

Concurso de jardines (Garden contest) – EMAC EP and the Municipal Tourism Foundation is planning a garden and balcony flowers contest for the calle Rafael María Arízaga.  (Isn’t that where someone was shot recently?  I guess the city wants to change that image.)

Dia International del Adulto Mayor (International Day of the Older Adult) – MIES of Zone 6 (Azuay, Cañar and Morona Santiago) is planning artistic, cultural and sports events for the day which is celebrated on 1/10.  Activities will start on 26/9.  (A half marathon, Iron Man event, break dancing, and spoken word. Not that there aren’t old folks capable of these activities, but I’m not one of them.)  The real agenda will be available next week.  (Just in case anyone took me seriously.)

Public announcement – ETAPA announced temporary interruption of fixed line telephone service from 1/10 at 8:00 to 3/10 at 16:00.  This will affect node 64-AA in Balzay, in the San José sector from calle Del Arriero to De la Ruda and from av. Ordóñez lasso to calle Siglatón.

Internacional –

Venezuela – A member of the government’s PSUV party said that there were thousands of fraudulent events in the collection of signatures for the referendum to remove Pres. Maduro and that it would be impossible to hold the referendum in 2016 and impossible or very improbable to hold it in 2017.  (Delaying tactics until Lurch’s term is over.)

And that´s all for today so Hasta Domingo –
