Articles about –

Planetario (Planetarium) – The planetarium in parque De La Madre has installed new equipment with high tech sound and which can project 360 degrees.  This equipment was installed under a warrantee from the French company that installed the previous system.  (Which, if I remember correctly, had problems with the projector.  Nice to know the city didn’t get stuck with a non-functioning system.)

Circo de Rusia (Russian Circus) – “Impulso” opened Fri. in front of the platform in Narancay, past Control Sur (more or less the south end of Las Americas). Tickets available in the “módulo de venta” (a ticket booth?) on the first floor of the Milenium Plaza.  The circus will be in town until 6/11.

Concierto – There will be a Latin American music festival with groups playing traditional Andean music on traditional instruments Sat. at 14:00 in the parque De La Madre.

Música – “Cantando como yo canto” (Singing like I sing) will be Sat. at 19:00 in the Teatro Pumapungo as part of the 6th Festival Estudiantil de Música Nacional.  There will be singers and choruses from 23 schools.

Recital – Darío Torres will give a classical guitar recital Sat. at 19:00 in the Sala de Conciertos de la Casa de la Cultura. (Classical was defined as the traditional music of the country – this country.  Not some European country.)  Cost: $5.00.

“Nigma Rumbo a Orlando” (Nigma on course for Orlando) – Nigma, the winning troupe of the “All Dance International” contest in Salinas will represent Ecuador in Orlando at the end of Nov.  They performed their winning act Fri. at the Teatro Sucre.  In addition to the 16 member group, there are dancers from 6 other schools.

Fiesta agenda events –

domingo, 30/10 –
Fun Run – Parque de la Madre – 8:30
La Gran Retreta, the Citizens’ Guard band – Glorieta in the Parque Calderón – 19:00.

Feria de Artesanias Casa de la Mujer (Womens’ House Crafts Fair) – Parque de San Blas – 8:00.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Jóvenes ensayan desfile por fiestas (Youth rehearse for Fiesta parade) – 700 students from 11 schools will be in the “Ecuador, diversidad y cultura” Parade on miércoles, 2/11 starting at 10:00. The parade route will be along Bolívar from San Blas to Parque Calderón.

Petroecuador – The Ecuadorian government asked the US and Spain to “retirar” (to withdraw (you see that on your ATM screen), recall, remove (that’s what your waiter is asking you before he removes the plates – if you don’t know Spanish you’ve probably been reading the body language and nodding your head.) the visas of 17 people involved in the Petroecuador corruption case.  (So if you’re already in South America and running from prosecution, I guess you go north.)

Crocodile – A more than 4.5 meter long crocodile, rescued in Naranjal, Guayas, was taken to the Amaru Zoo yesterday.

10 most common last names – (No, you’re not reading the other gringo on-line publication) The most common last names in Azuay are Morocho, Cabrera, Guaman, Sanchez, Loja, Orellana, Leon, Calle, López and Pesántez.  The least common are Fischler, Molinares, England, Boudon, Marthinez, Gurung, Falkentoft, Skiadas, Blacido and Casuso.
A program called “Ecuador en Cifras” (Ecuador in Figures) of the Census agency will let you search data from 1800-2015.

Play Land Park – The City has authorized the use of a site on Enríque Arízaga, near the Gran Sol (formerly Coop) Restaurant in San Joaquin. It’s next to a vía rápida and will be fenced off to keep people from wandering into the high speed road.  (A few pages before this article was a quarter page ad from the neighbors of the site warning about traffic and parking problems since that road is the only unimpeded one (since Lasso is torn up) to and from Molleturo-Naranjal and then on to Guayaquil.)

JEP – The largest coop in the financial system has been approved to offer credit cards. (Did you know that JEP stands for Juventud Ecuatoriana Progresista (Progressive Ecuadorian Youth)?)

Events – (I guess this is where the low brow events, as opposed to the cultural, get publicized.)

“Zoodiedad” – The alternative space bar (calle bajada del Padrón y Benigno Malo) is celebrating its 10th anniversary.  It will present “Los del 53” playing Cuban rumba today at 22:00. Sábado there will be a costume dance.

Concierto de acordéon – Accordionist Rubén Ruipérez with his reportoire of “música del mundo” will play tonight at 20:00 in the mini-theater at La Cuchara Mágica (Gran Colombia y Benigno Malo 8-86).  Cost:  $10.00

(Or maybe they just ran out of space on the Culture Page.)

Internacional –

Colombia – The public phase of the peace talks between the Colombian government and ELN which was to start in Quito yesterday, was suspended after Colombia said it would not open the talks until ELN releases an excongressman who was abducted 6 months ago.

And that´s all for today so Hasta Domingo –
