Titular – Jueves de Compadres en la antesala del Carnaval (Godfathers’ Thursday on the Eve of Carnaval) – Cuencanos and tourists mixed it up in parque Calderón and vicinity with spray foam, streamers, and corn starch. (No wonder it took me so long to get through El Centro last night. Traffic like NY rush hour without the road rage.)

Conserve water – consumers served by the Nero and Baños systems are being asked to conserve water.

Zika – there are 39 confirmed cases in Ecuador, 25 locally contracted, and the other 14 in other countries. The cases are in the following provinces – Manabí-13, Galápagos-1, Los Ríos.2, Azuay-1, El Oro-1, Guayas-10, and Pichincha-11.

Prepaid health and insurance companies – are being debated in the Assembly. The law would regulate the companies in terms of what they need to cover, not jacking up rates if the insured finds a chronic or catastrophic medical problem, not denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. (Sounds like a patient centered law and the article did mention it would benefit the disabled and elderly.)

Permisos turísticos – for the permit requirements for proprietors of lodging, food, and drink establishments go to www.turismo.gob.ec. (So if you want to get legal, start there. Or start with your facilitator if “there” is in a language foreign to you. Or get a lawyer.)

Your sliver of life article today – is about the livestock fair in Patamarca where the traffic was more chaotic than usual because of the demand from Carnaval.

Intercultural –

Motepata and chicha de jora – are made from ancestral corn. Motepata is traditional food during Carnaval. Besides the mote, there is pork tenderloin, meaty pork bones and smoked bacon. (How could that not be good? Aside from the pig’s point of view.)
