Sequía empacta en salud animal (Drought impacts animal health) – The drought is affecting animals that are suffering from digestive, respiratory, and dermatological problems due to the drought, abrupt weather changes, high UV radiation and frosts <Is there even enough moisture in the air to form frost?> Pastures are dry and animals that feed on them cannot meet their caloric needs. Rural veterinarian Xavier Lojano said that digestive problems are surging which can cause infections and reduce production. Affected animals also do not reproduce. For pets, dogs are most affected by extreme radiation. They can suffer burns on their feet pads and from the pavement. Adriana Tiñegañay, owner of The Dog Spa Estética y Consultorio, recommends not taking dogs out between 8:30 and 6:30 when it’s sunniest. <What about a dog that takes herself out and sunbathes in the straw that passes for a lawn?>

Iluminación navideña con energía renovable (Christmas lighting with renewable energy) – Using Christmas lights in the middle of blackouts has generated debate on the responsible use of electricity vs. tradition and consumption of energy during the fiestas. The 41-meter Christmas tree will be in the plaza San Francisco this year, and its LED lights will be powered entirely with solar energy as will be the nativity scene in El Otorongo and the ornaments along av Solano. The tree will consume about 1,330 kilowatt hours – about the same as 8 houses. The solar panels will be housed in 2 booths or stands and will remain to help power the plaza after the tree is dismanteled.
There are alternatives on the market that allow keeping Christmas traditions without increasing electrical consumption. These include LED lights that use 80% less electricity than conventional bulbs and decorations that use rechargable batteries or portable solar energy systems.
Darwin Molina, an engineer for the Siscon Grupo UV, said there are photovoltaic kits that allow families to maintain essential services such as lighting, internet, security cameras and up to Christmas lights. <Refrigerator and freezer?> A one kilowatt basic kit that will cover basic necessities costs around $800 while a 2 kw family kit costs around $1,400. Molina emphasized the importance of investing in these technologies as a long-term solution even though the initial costs seems high. Over time it is cost-effective since it uses sunlight, a renewable resource without pollution. Another alternative are UPS units to maintain Internet, laptop computers or low consumption Christmas lights. There are also sets of 10 lights that incorporate a solar panel that can supply 10-12 hours of lights.

Llegan 23 generadores de energía a Guayaquil (23 power generators arrive in Guayaquil) – 23 stationary power generators arrived in the port of Guayaquil ayer. These units will add 80 megawatts to the national electrical system. The generators will be installed in Salitral. In the next few days, ancillary equipment needed for the installation and testing will arrive. <Don’t ask me when that will be – the paper doesn’t say, and they probably don’t know either. We’re not in Kansas anymore – get used to waiting. Unless you’re waiting for life saving medical treatment when being stressed is understandable.>
And that’s all for today so hasta ? –
