Walking into Delicias Chinas on Hermano Miguel feels like stepping into the kitchen of Liu Liyuan, and Du Chuansheng (Lily and Duke) back in Kunming, China. They opened their restaurant in June 2024, and ever since, they’ve been sharing the flavors of their hometown with locals and visitors alike. Despite being in Cuenca for just a year and a half, they’ve already become part of the community, welcoming each guest with warm smiles and friendly conversation. Right away, I felt at ease like a guest in their home, rather than just a customer.

Liu Liyuan, and Du Chuansheng (Lily and Duke)

Located at Hermano Miguel 4-30, at the top of the stairs leading from Parque de la Madre, this restaurant combines the charm of Cuenca with the cozy feel of a traditional Chinese eatery. The décor is simple yet inviting: a few touches of classic Chinese art, comfortable seating, and just enough space for a laid-back lunch or dinner. Large windows in front let in plenty of natural light, making it a perfect spot for seniors who appreciate a quiet, cheerful place to enjoy a good meal.

This isn’t your typical Cuenca “Chifa.” Delicias Chinas boasts a menu full of time-honored Chinese dishes, many of which are favorites in Kunming, the city Lily and Duke hail from. Expect to find specialties like Patatas Fritas Ralladas or Fried Shredded Potatoes which is a specialty of Kunming, Yunnan province. Also expect the classics like General Tso’s Chicken, Sweet and Sour Pork and Pork and Cabbage Dumplings. The variety is impressive, and because each dish is cooked by a native-trained Chinese chef, you can count on genuine flavors that honor tradition.

If you’re looking for a filling midday meal at a reasonable price, try their lunch specials. You’ll get a bowl of egg drop soup and a light appetizer, a main dish featuring your choice of protein (think chicken, pork, or tofu), steamed or fried rice, and a refreshing cup of steaming hot tea. It’s a great way to explore a taste of Yunnan cooking without breaking the bank.

I decided to go with the Friday lunch Special of Chicken Fried Noodles served with Tomato and Egg  Soup and Stir Fried Lettuce and it was delicious.  Every dish felt homemade and prepared with care—exactly what Lily and Duke aimed for when they opened this hidden gem.

Yunnan cuisine shares some characteristics with Sichuan food, especially in terms of spiciness. It is fundamentally its own style with influences from various ethnic groups and neighboring countries. It is neither strictly Cantonese nor Sichuan but rather a unique blend that reflects the cultural diversity of Yunnan Province.

Lily greeted me at the door, while Duke was busy in the kitchen, expertly handling the sizzling woks. Throughout my meal, the staff remained attentive, answering questions about the menu and sharing small stories about Kunming’s climate remarkably similar to Cuenca’s. Their pride in their work and heritage is evident in both the service and the food.

When it came time to pay, I found the pricing fair for such authentic cuisine, friendly service, and generous portions. Lily thanked me warmly as I left, reminding me of how they aim to make every guest feel appreciated. It’s a personal touch that makes a big difference, especially for those of us looking for that special spot to become our new favorite hangout.

Dining at Delicias Chinas was both comforting and eye-opening. Lily and Duke have brought a piece of Kunming to Cuenca, and it shows in every detail—from the relaxed atmosphere to the genuine flavors. If you’re craving an authentic Chinese meal or simply want a cozy spot to meet friends, this place is a must-visit.
