Elefante and Bacilos in concert at the coliseum – Saturday, June 21, 8:30 pm at the Jefferson Pérez coliseum. The bands will perform both their classic songs and their latest compositions.

The band Tercer Mundo will play in Cuenca – The Tercer Mundo (Third World) band will be in Cuenca Saturday, 28/6 in the ‘Histórico’ Club (Bolívar y Benigno Malo) as part of their ‘Tercer Mundo Íntimo’ tour of Ecuador.  <No time given – you or your facilitator can call the club.> The 37-year-old band will be playing in intimate venues – small spaces such as restaurants and bars that are adaptable to an acoustic sound.  <So all you gringos with old ears can enjoy music played at lower decibel levels.>
Random note: ¿Qué hacen con partes humanas amputadas? (What do they do with amputated human parts?) – <I’m sure you’ve always wanted to know this, especially if you ever watched any of those extreme surgery shows where it looks like the doctors just throw the disconnected parts into a 55-gallon drum.> The discovery of a human leg in the Pichacay land fill generated concerns about protocols that are followed about the disposition of amputated parts. <Geeze – did my boob wind up in the landfill after the mastectomy?>
It opened up a debate about the management of these parts by health institutions and funeral services. According to the Ministerial Agreement 192, there are two ways to manage extremities amputated in hospitals: donation for organ and tissue transplants or cremation and burial. <So if your leg gets buried after an accident at age 30, does that get dug up when you die at age 105 so you can be reunited with your leg?> The final decision lies with the family of the patient and depending on the medical circumstances around the amputation.
Acceptable parts such as those due to an accident and that are not infected are taken and kept in the Banco de Huesos (Bone Bank) where they are technically and ethically managed to conform with current law. For cremations and burials, the parts must be accompanied by appropriate paperwork from the hospital.
