Jueves, 31/12/2015: 150 year old manger scene, children’s programs, another parade, police discover corruption within their ranks

Jan 1, 2016 | 0 comments

Hola, Todos – Feliz Año!

It´s going to be a short issue today – I’ve got a party to go to and I want to finish the translation this year.

Pagina cultural –

Exposición – a 150 year old chl jeanne logomanger scene is at the Sala Temporal del Museo del Monasterio de las Conceptas until the first week in Jan, 2016.

Danza – a Danza del Vientre (Belly Dance – another useless word for the day) and Danza del Vientre Tribal is this Thu, 7/12/2016 at 19:00 in the Gato Alado Project (Pres. Córdova en 14-43)  (Happy New Year, fellows.)

Música – a salsa concert with “Los del 53” on 8/1/2016 at 2100 in Republica Sur (Pres. Córdova 5-55)

Articles about –

Cultural entities that are defining their objectives for 2016.  One proposal is to put book dispensers on buses.  Riders can take a book out, read it and return it to a bus. (You think that all those books would really get put back?)  A new library will open in Turi.

Bienal – you’ve got to15/1 to enter.  Go to comunicacion@bienaldecuenca.org or their offices at Simón Bolívar 13-89 y Esévez de Toral.

Sono will have programs for children with workshops in guitar, piano, drums and modern music with emphasis on Ecuadorian music.

The traditional Pase del Niño Rey will be this coming Tue, 5/1/16.  The parade will start from from San Blas at 14:30, going along Bolívar to Santa Cenáculo. This traditional parade is more than 100 years old.

D.T, an artist in the CRS learned drawing while in jail and started painting and drawing. Now he is putting his designs on guitars. The drawing courses are part of the rehabilitation programs at Turi. (And that does sound like the jail is a place where inmates can be rehabilitated rather than taught how to expand their criminal resume.)

Otras cosas –

Titular – Entusiasmo para depedir el 2015 (Enthusiasm for firing 2015 – wonder if there are any Trump monigotes.)

Your sliver of life article – is about a structure in Cullca for an ITUR office that was never occupied and is now falling apart.

The police have discovered presumed corruption in their ranks. 19 cops have been detained for selling passes for $1500 to $2000 to recruits who want to change the province where they serve.  (If I’m understanding the article correctly – always a big “if.”)

Holidays for 2016-2020 have been announced by Pres. Correa. 5 years are announced to facilitate planning, especially in the tourism sector.  Go to the web site for the ministerios Coordinador de Producción, Trabajo, Educación andTurismo. (I’m not sure it it’s one department or several.)

Professional drivers – will have a new curriculum in driving schools. (Let’s hope that some of it deals with customer service.)

Toni – has suspended taking delivery of 10,000 liters of milk a day from the south.  At first it was an 8 day suspension and has increased to 15. At 15 days, the milk would have to be thrown or given away. (Don’t point out that they could make cheese – what do you think Toni makes?)  Toni blamed decreased demand and said it would increase powdered milk production, but the there are factory limitations.

An article about the sombrero de paja toqulla from the straw to export. Weavers in Sígsig start at 5am to buy their straw.  For a common hat, they receive $6-8, and for hats at grades 16-20, the weaver earns $27-30. (And these are the hats that retail for hundreds or thousands of dollars? I guess the middlemen make all the money.)  Over 10,000 weavers are registered in Ecuador, 80% of them in Azuay.

Internacional –

Latin America – has become the biggest net (Google wanted me to believe that neto (net) was grandson – makes a lot of sense in an article about exports, doesn’t it.) exporter of food in the world, surpassing North America.

Colombia – is suffering a drought due to El Niño with rivers at their lowest levels in 15 years.  Pres. Santos announced that 13 provinces especially affected by forest fires will receive $2.2 million in aid and 31 forest fire fighting kits.

Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay – will each receive $100,000 from El Banco de Desarrollo de América Latina (Development Bank of Latin America) for flood evacuees and has authorized loans of $50 million to each government.  (Can we blame El Niño for drought in the north and flood in the south?)

Discuentos – and other shopping news

Mall del Rio – the food court will be open tomorrow from 11-20:00.  (I wonder if they’ll be selling hangover remedies?)

And that´s all for today so Hasta Mañana –

Jeanne
