Premier – “Mi Tía Toty” will premier at a special performance hoy, a las 20:00 in the Multicines del Milenium Plaza. Toty Rodríguez and director León Felipe Troya will attend the event.

Arte en la calle (Art in the street) – “Arte Calle” will be back mañana a las 10:00 in the La Condomine pedestrian street. The “Llevaitrae”band from México will perform and there will be paintings and sculpture.

Exposición – The exhibit, “Mullos y más mullos” (Beads and more beads) will open mañana a las 17:00 at “Pájarogato” art center (Juan Jaramillo 6-26 entre Borrero y Hermano Miguel. Some of the works will be for sale.

New magazine – The School of Arts at the U. of Cuenca is adding “Tsantsa,” it’s magazine to the the Latindex Regional On-line Information System for Scientific Publications fro Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. The magazine is annual and a platform for research in visual arts, design, scenic arts and music.

Book launch – Eliécer Cárdenas launched “El universo mágico de Claudio Alberto Soriano” (The magic universe of Claudio Alberto Soriano) hoy a las 16:00 in the Casa Azul Galería-Café (calle San Sebastián). Alberto Soriano is a painter who was born in Cuzco, Perú and has lived in Cuenca for 25 years.

Concierto – Polish pianist Grzegorz Niemzuck <How in the world do you pronounce that?> performed with the Chamber Orchestra of the U. of Guayaquil Fri. at the Teatro Sucre.

Teatro – The Barojo theater group is starting a new season with the performance of “La Boda de Dorimena” (Dorimena’s Wedding) hoy y mañana a las 19:30 in the Centro Cultural “El Prohibido.” The play is based on Molier’s “Casamiento a la fuerza.”

Odebrecht – The Attorney General Carlos Baca Mancheno will make an announcement about the request from the ex Minister of Hydrocarbons, Carlos Pareja Yannuzzelli, for a “cooperación eficáz” (efficient cooperation – plea bargain?) in exchange for information about Odebrecht and Petroecuador.

Violence prevention – The National Assembly’s Parliamentary Group on Womens’ Rights delivered a project for a Law to Prevent and Eradicate Violence against Women to the xczAssembly President, José Serrano. The law will go to the Legislative Administration Committee el próximo lunes.

Plaza San Francisco – Pablo Barzallo, Director of Historic Areas explained the project to about 80 merchants in the sector and in the Casa de la Mujer. He talked about traffic and parking. Because of the closeness of the 10 de Agosto market and the traffic it generates, loading and unloading will be from 20:00 at night to 8:00 the next morning. There will also be street work on General Torres and Padre Aguirre from calle de San Francisco to Pres. Córdova and then from calle S.F to Juan Jaramillo. The second phase of street work will be on Pres. Córdova. He talked about a schedule that would have less impact on traffic and daily life. <Hopefully, less than the Tranvía.>

Quimsacocha – Ecuarunari is inviting people to visit the laguna de Quisacocha el sábado. Meet at 7:00 in Parque Calderón, departure at 8:00 and return at 15:00. <I’m not sure who their target invitees are so surprise them. Load that bus with gringos. Enjoy yourselves. I don’t do 7 am for much less than an earthquake.>

Free medical attention – The Punto de Salud de Farmasol 27 de Febrero (av. 10 de Agosto y Adolfo Torres) offers free general medical attention lunes a viernes from 8-18:00. <So if you decided IESS was too expensive, here’s an option for non-catastrophic stuff – courtesy of the taxpayers of Ecuador. Socialismo en servicio a los extranjeros del norte. Would you Republicans and Libertarians feel guilty about using this service? Or does price trump politics?>

Mining – The residents of the Río Blanco community from which the megamine takes its name, reported that “ojos de agua” (pools) and lakes which are their water sources are drying up which will make the area uninhabitable. They are asking the Gov’t of Azuay to visit the area and look at the environmental damage. One lake where trout used to spawn has been filled with dirt by the mine.

Candles – “Fábrica de Velas Herminio Delgado Compañía Limitada” is a family business with 3 generations working in it. Herminio Delgado started in his house in El Vecino 50 years ago and the factory is now in the Parque Industrial with a branch in the Mall del Río and employs 75 people. In 2000, annual sales were $250,000 and now sales to just supermarkets is $1,500,000. The company plans to sell internationally once they have complete coverage in Ecuador.

Workers’ rights – Domestic employees have the same rights as other workers in areas such as work hours, pay, vacations and benefits such as Social Security. <Are you giving your cleaning lady her vacation and paying into Social Security?>
