Musical gas comes to Cuenca next month

In a pilot project to evaluate feasibility, some trucks that deliver LP gas tanks to homes and businesses will use music instead of horns to alert customers. The project begins in October and continues until the end of the year.

The project has been ordered by the Cuenca transportation authority (OCSM).

The honking currently used by gas delivery trucks — consisting of a series of short beeps — has drawn complaints from residents and pedestrians. Many of the gas deliveries are made during early morning hours.

The musical alternative has been adopted in a number of Latin American cities but has drawn protests in others. The Quito transportation department is currently negotiating with gas delivery companies who claim they will lose customers if beeping is outlawed.

In Cuenca, OCSM will determine the volume and type of music that will be used, as well as acceptable speaker quality.
