Articles about –

Bienal – The Bienal will open in 3 weeks, and is waiting for the arrival and/or flight plans of more than 20 artists (Is art a profession that puts things off to the last minute?)  zfrom every continent except Antarctica. 48 were selected in all.  So far, 50% of the works have been mounted. Some artists had their work shipped and others will install their work on site.  For the first time in 30 years, the work of an artist who died between his selection and the Bienal will be shown.

“Cuentos fantásticos” (Fantastic stories) – The second volume of this series of books will be ready next month, in time for Christmas.  The first volume had 20 fables to appeal to children to encourage reading.

“Noveno Concurso Nacional y Cuarto Latinoamericano a la Excelencia Educativa” (9th National and 4th Latin American Contest for Educational Excellence) – Entries for this 12 category contest are due 10/12.  Go to wwwfidal-amlat.org to find out more.  (I know it will be in Spanish, but if you’re submitting a proposal to improve education, you’ll be able to negotiate a web site in Spanish.  The rest of you can forget about winning a scholarship or a trip out of the country.)

Ópera – The premiere of the opera “Pasión a Dolores” will not be today.  According to an agreeement signed by the OSC and the promoter, the premiere will be 16-18/11.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Clinton o Trump, duda se despeja hoy (Clinton or Trump,
doubt will be cleared today) (Maybe not since one of the candidates refuses to lose even if it does.)

Explosion – One soldier was killed and 5 injured when “material bélico” (war material) exploded in a warehouse in Latacunga. Minister of Defense said that there were only armaments but not explosives or grenades being stored.

Galápagos – There was a declaration of an emergency due to the the drought which is affecting the agriculture which feeds the more or less 25,000 people in the archipelago.  Last septiembre, the army provided two tanker trucks to the agricultural sectors on Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal.

Tourism forum – There will be a forum about developing community tourism along the Qhapac Ñan (Camino Real – Royal Road/Inca Trail) in Ecuador, Bolivia and Perú. The forum will meet in Alausí from 8-11/11 to integrate community tourism offerings in the 3 countries and to provide sustainable income to the communities contiguous to the Trail.

Feriados – 68,000 tourists came to Cuenca during the Día de los Difuntos and Independencia de Cuenca holidays.  The mayor said that at least 50,000 of these visitors stayed in Cuenca and the rest in nearby cantons. The Permanent Festival Committee estimated that 180,000 people participated in the celebrations.

Electricity cuts – You can go to www.centrosur.gob.ec to find out when planned electricity shut offs will be.  You can also see your bill and apply to change your meter to accommodate an induction range.  (If you can read a date and a time, you don’t need Spanish.  The electric company sends messages to my phone and basically apologizes for the inconvenience and then tells me when this inconvenience will occur – usually 1 or 2 days ahead.)

Flight information – You can check flight times, routes and climate conditions at the CORPAC Twitter account: @Aeropuerto_CUE. The two airlines also provide information at @TAME_EP and @LATAM_ECU.b

Internacional –

Nicaragua – Daniel Ortega was reelected Pres. and his wife, Rosario Murillo, was elected VP.  There was a high rate of abstentions which the opposition said was a message to the government.

And that´s all for today so Hasta Mañana –
