Articles about –

CCE – The Casa de la Cultura has opened a new extension in Oña.

OSC – The Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca presented its XX concert of 2016 Season 1 with guest conductor Stephanie Praduroux of Italy and guest violinist Francisco Vila of Ecuador Fri in the Teatro Pumapungo. The program included Rosamunda by Fraz Shubert (?), Concierto for Cello and Orchestra in Re Mayor, Op. 101 by Haydn and Symphony N. 4 in Re Menor, Op. 120 by Robert Schumann. This concert is the one that was reported in Tuesday’s paper as being on Sun.

Flavors and knowledge – The book, “Memorias culinarias de la zona rural de Tungurahua was presented Fri in the Warmi Cocina Taller (Hermano Miguel 5-42).  The event is the work of the Proyecto Central Dogma de Ambato which seeks to put value on ancestral knowledge. There was dialogue with attendees (in Spanish, probably), a video and testimony about the diffusion of and stories about the values of ancestral cooking. Part of the book contains recipes such as one for an energy drink made of brown sugar, cinnamon, and raw oats.  (Except for the raw part, sounds like how my Mom made oatmeal.)

Medicinal plants – The UPS presented the documentary video “Yachay Runa-Sabiduría para la vida”  (Yachay Runa – Wisdom for life) Fri about the use of medicinal plants in the Santa Barbara River watershed.  The Dirección Provincial del Ministerio de Salud (Provincial Department of the Ministry of Health) has a register of 315 women who practice traditional Andean medicine. (Read the article in Friday’s CHL before you start self medicating with these plants.)

Fotografías – A photo exhibit, “El hombre, perpetuo solitario” (Man, perpetually alone) by a group of students in the School of Arts at the U of Cuenca opened Fri in the Casa de las Posadas (Gran Colombia y Miguel Heredia).  The photos show a dark side including images of autopsies, violence against man, and slaughterhouses.  (I’d suggest not eating before you go, and you may be a vegetarian by the time you leave.)

Otras cosas –

Titular – Eje de labor será la familia (Axis of work will be the family) – Monseñor Marcos Pérez Caicedo, the new Archbishop of Cuenca will focus his work on the family where a person is formed and this will serve to strengthen the Church and society.

Airport – Technicians from Quiport, S.A. completed friction tests on Wed, and Thu., and the results delivered Fri.  The test consisted of a truck going 95 kph and towing a gizmo with a tire like an aircraft tire that rubs along the surface being tested. It was recommended that Cuenca do that testing once a year.  It’s done monthly in Quito.

Tranvía – Traffic on the bridge over the Yanuncay opened to all lanes yesterday. Traffic cops were controlling traffic at the intersection, and workers were synchronizing the stop lights. Work on the Tranvía platform is continuing without affecting traffic flow.  Shortly, a redondel (round-about) will be built at the intersection.

Driver’s license renewals – To renew your driver’s license you need to pass a written test.  You can download the bank of questions from the website of the Agencia Nacional de Tránsito (ANT), www.ant.gob.ec.  Click on “Banco de Preguntas Licencia.”  You can also take a practice test on-line.  (If you passed it the first time, you can do it again unless you’ve forgotten all the Spanish you learned 5 years ago.)

Crafts fair – The 3d Feria Artesanal Casa de la Mujer will be in parque San Blas until Sunday from 9-20:00.

Feria – The “Hola Gente” (Hello, People) Fair will be this Sat. and Sun. from 10-21:00 in the ex Seminario San Luis courtyard.  There will be 15 vendors from Manabí showing off their gastronomy, and 15 local artisans. The seminary is located next to the Raymipampa restaurant, opposite Parque Calderon.

Amenidades –

Movies – as usual, go to www.multicines.com.ec for show times and locations.  The following movies open this week.
2D & 3D Vida secreta de tus mascotas – Esp.  (That may be something I really don’t want to know about.  I’d only worry.)
2D Los ilusionistas 2 – Esp.
2D Truman – Esp.
The following movies are continuing.
2D & 3D La era de Hielo 5 – Esp.
2D Leyenda de Tarzán – Esp.
2D Yo antes de ti – Esp.
2D 12 horas para sobrevivir – Esp.
(So unless you speak Spanish, you’re out of luck for the “theater experience” this week.)

And that´s all for today so Hasta Domingo (Hallelujah – a day off!)
