Articles about –

CCE – The Casa de la Cultura, Núcleo del Azuay has formed branches in every canton of Azuay except San Fernando and El Pan.  The branches are planning activities such as Nabón with its fiestas of cantonization on 2, 3, & 4/12;  Chordaleg with its project to rescue and rename a plazoleta to Plazoleta Artesanal Cultureal de Chordaleg for use as a weekend crafts market. (Could grow it to become the Otovalo del Austro (of the south).)

Digital literacy – A new round of digital literacy ABCs will start on lunes, 7/11 with hours from M-F from 15-17:00 at 8 community centers.  For more info, call 282 4462 or 409 6994 and register with a copy of your cédula.

“Cuenca Encuentros” – This theater project by Teatro Barojo and the CCE is celebrating its first year.  On the 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, & 18 there will be performances in the Sala Alfonso Carrasco at the CCE, and on sábado, 12/11 in the Salón del Pueblo at 20:00. The project is to dramatize 33 popular characters in Cuenca such as the Atacocos, María la Guagua and Carlitos de la Bicicleta.  The schedule is below:

Opening –  “Cotidiano” (Day to day or daily)  by Paula Montesinos Álvarez opens on 9/11 at 19:00 in the Galería de la Alcaldía.  The exhibit has 15 acrylic on canvas paintings showing the artist’s and her dog’s daily life.

Unsión Plus – The channel is having a “Fiesta y Cultura 2016” on viernes, 11/11 at their offices on Juan Montalvo 7-40 y Sucre with painting, music, caricatures, photography, crafts and gastronomy.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Artesanos celebran antentos a nueva ley (Artisans celebrate with an eye to the new law)

Asamblea – The priorities for the Assembly for the rest of this year are laws about Environment, Crafts, Tourism, Culture, Seeds (I’m curious about this one – will it reiterate the consititutional ban on GMO products or was this law written by Monsanto?), reform to the Law on Public Service (is this the one that says, “Thou shalt not evade rendering unto Caesar by use of tax havens”?), an a law about Work which regulates holidays in Ecuador.

Earthquake – there was a 3.6 quake in Cañar at 7:52 at 2.58 degrees south and 79.24 degrees west at a depth of 29.79 km. There was no report of victims or material damage.  (If the location had to be given in coordinates, doesn’t that imply it was in the middle of nowhere?)

Milk producers – Small producers of Azuay and Cañar met yesterday in Cuenca and adopted 3 resolutions.  They will “hacer un plantón” (stage a sit-in?) in Parque Calderón at 10:00 on viernes, the day a free trade agreement between Ecuador and the EU will be signed.  The milk producers feel they will be hurt by the agreement which allows import of powdered milk.  The second resolution will be to organize workshops in the parishes where there are problems with the sales to large dairy processors.  The third is to meet on the 1st sábado in diciembre with members of the National Assembly Commission on Food Sovereignty and Agricultural and Fisheries Development.

Actualidades –

Articles about –

Ecology – The municipal market of San Pedro La Laguna which serves an indigenous community in the interior of Guatemala, has ditched plastic bags in favor of banana tree leaves to wrap purchases.  The city is on Lake Atlitlán which has become contaminated, and a source of worry for a town dependent on tourism and commerce.  One butcher said that banana leaves don’t pollute the lake.

More myth and legends – go to the page http://mitosyleyendas-cuenca.blogspot.com/ and http://quesabesdecuenca.blogspot.com/ to read about the Perro encadenado and the Cura sin cabeza (Chained dog and Headless Priest).

Deportes –
From Saturday’s paper

Corre Papá Noel Corre (Run, Santa, Run) – Registrations for this traditional race will open on 15/12 (I think it should be 15/11) with the race on domingo, 11/12 at 10:00. This year there will be a category for pets with a “Best Christmas Costume” prize. There is space for 250 runners.  The route will be Plaza Otogrongo, up Condamine, along calle Larga, down the bajada de Todos Santos, and along 12 de Abril to parque El Paraíso.

And that´s all for today so Hasta Mañana –
