Hola, Todos –
I’m going to take a few days off next week from martes through viernes to catch up on personal stuff.
Pagina cultural –
Today’s (Fri.) agenda event –
Teatro – The acting group Teatro pie presented “La Ultima Función” (The Last Function – it’s about the end of mathematics.) Fri. in the sala “Alfonso Carrasco” in the CCE.
Articles about –
Mauricio Vicencio – The founder of the Chilean group Altiplano, plays many indigenous musical instruments and performed in a concert Fri. in the teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz.
Lucía Astudillo – The director of the Museo de los Metales and also founder and president of ICOM Ecuador, an international museum council, received recognition from ICOM.
Diccionario – The “Diccionario de la lengua morlaca” (Morlaca Dictionary) – was launched on miércoles. It was published under the auspices of the Municipal Department of External Affairs and Culture. The support was given to protect the linguistic heritage of the city and to publicize it, preferably to the “extranjeros” (foreigners) who live here. (Who do you think is the target extranjero market? Other Latinos or English speaking foreigners? When I get my copy (assuming that I can find one – I’ve been looking for Barbarismos for at least 3 years in 3 countries.) I’ll know because of the language the definitions are given in.)
Christmas concerts – The chorus and orchestra of the U. of Cuenca will give 3 Christmas concerts on martes, 13 in the Catedral Vieja; el jueves, 15 in the teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz; and on martes, 20 in the templo de Todos Santos. The program includes Handel’s Aleluya Chorus (You know the work – sound it out with the Spanish pronunciation.), Colombian “villancicos” (I translated this for you last year. Do you mean to tell me you’ve forgotten? Too bad.), Spirituals (Gospel) and more. (There will probably another article or an agenda item with the time.)
Book launch – “Hienas” (Hyenas) was launched last miércoles. It follows “Agitadas sombras bajo un nuevo sol” which stirred up a lot of controversy. Hienas is about a powerful family connected to “those who matter” and includes intrigue, treachery, and a crime. (It sounds like a good book. I can read the paper, but fiction is a lot harder.)
Otras cosas –
Titular – Restringen tráfico vehicular (Vehicular traffic restricted) – Work has started on stabilizing a fault in Turi. The south to north lane (Cuenca to Azogues) is closed and the other lane has been made two way. Part of the median strip was opened near the Grúas Quintuña (a towing company, I think) to allow transition to the open lane. The highway was started in June, 1993 and took 30 months to build. (Did it replace the old highway to Paute? Just think how much worse going to Azogues would have been pre-1993.)
Salary increase – The CNTS (National Council on Labor and Salaries) will meet next week to debate the basic salary. (I thought yesterday the decision had been made, but it was only the governments proposal. When I don’t understand, it’s 180 degrees off.) The government takes into account the projected inflation for the coming year which is estimated at 2.3% or $8.42. The FUT (Workers’ Unified Front) wants the salary to go up by $130.13 so that the basic salary is equal to the poverty line of $496.52. (So how many of you would think about laying off your cleaning lady should the SBU go up that much?)
Bonds – The government issued $750 million in 10 year bonds on the international market with an interest rate of 9.65%. This follows an issue of $1 billion last septiembre carrying 10.75% interest.
G-77 – Ecuador will assume the presidency of the G-77 nations in enero.
Elections – Today’s topic for the candidates is “golpe de timón a política y comercio exterior” (Blow to the political rudder and foreign trade. I’m including the headline so those of you who do know Spanish can do your own translation since mine doesn’t make much sense.)
Viernes blanco (White Friday) – The CCE has organized a bazaar for viernes 9, 16, & 23 to sell art, exotic stuff (like Jif peanut butter or pickled herring?), food and ecological designs. There will also be 40% off in the books in the librería Pedro Páramo (Pres. Córdova y Luis Cordero).
Your sliver of life article – “Conflicto por el agua en comunidad de La Paz” (Conflict over water in the La Paz community) – The La Paz Water Board serves 1,725 people in 235 families. The system was started in 1982 and there haven’t been problems even though the population has grown and 281 students in the La Paz school are in the service area. Raúl Mongrovejo, a landowner has demanded a concession of water from a slope that doesn’t serve the village, and has cut a ditch to divert water. He has at least 3 reservoirs on his property. The president of the community said that there’s always been harmony including with two foreign families living in the community, and Sr. Mongrovejo is the only one who has been a problem. If one person gets private water for one reason, then another person will have another reason, etc. (It’s a sliver of life because of an underlying attitude that water is a communal rather than personal resource and the noting that even foreigners have lived in the harmony with the rest of the community.)
